Responsibilities

  • You will inspect heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACandR) equipment to verify the equipment and component parts aremaintained in a safe and serviceable condition.
  • You will dismantle, repair, and reassemble air conditioning components (e.g., pumps, impellers, compressors, chillers, receivers, evaporators) to returnequipment to working condition.
  • You will check operation of different parts of the refrigeration cycle (e.g., temperature of cooling units, temperature of liquid and suction lines, runningtime of mechanisms).
  • You will troubleshoot refrigeration, air conditioning, ventilation, and related control systems (e.g., direct digital control [DDC]) to determine systemoperation and detect component malfunctions.

  • This position is considered Key/Non-Combat Essential. You will be required to provide immediate and continuing support of the expeditionary requirements in other than combat or combat support situations.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is the ability to perform the work of an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by: 1) Diagnose, locate, and repair malfunctions to the main operating mechanical components of large heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems (HVAC) such as compressors, evaporators, condensers, cooling coils, air handlers, water control valves, and air dampers; 2) Use trade tools and test equipment such as voltage, amperage, and ohm meters, electronic refrigerant leak detectors, temperature gauges, capacitors, and analyzers; AND 3) Follow safety procedures and practices when repairing air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.

This announcement uses the NAVFAC Policy for Temporary Direct Hire Authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.

This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

This position requires rotating shift work.

Call back and emergency overtime are regular requirements of this position.

Physical Demands: Physical effort is required to maneuver equipment in and out of specific locations while dismantling and reassembling. The work requires frequent carrying and setting-up of parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Occasionally may lift items weighing over 50 pounds with assistance. Hoists, holders, and pulleys are operated when removing units such as large compressors, condensers, and chillers. The work requires making repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where the parts of systems worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places; therefore, stooping stretching, bending, and kneeling are frequent and may be for long periods of time.

Working Conditions: The incumbent works both inside and outside, sometimes in bad weather, on top of tall buildings, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Areas are noisy, dirty, dusty and greasy. Working conditions are considered in the evaluation of the job and do not meet criteria for compensation or hazard pay.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
