The purpose of this position is to provide leadership on behalf of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in matters pertaining to continuing professional education and to provide oversight in the development and implementation of a comprehensive professional development program that supports the Association’s Strategic Pathway. Primary responsibilities include identification of relevant issues, trends and learning gaps/educational needs of members, and ongoing evaluation of ASHA professional development offerings in order to implement innovative, quality programs that maintain a balance between effective practices in adult education and financially sustainable business models; application of current and future-focused learning methodologies, as well as education technologies, to support program design and dissemination; and, establishing strategic marketing and operational plans in conjunction with Marketing and Sales staff to capitalize on existing sales and pursue new business opportunities. The incumbent will craft a vision for business development to maximize growth by establishing faculty, organizational and corporate partnerships and opportunities to provide customized options for program participation. This individual will also be responsible for coaching members of the ASHA Professional Development team, and shared leadership of the Professional Education Cluster.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as ex officio to the Scientific and Professional Education Board and advise groups involved in continuing professional education including the Convention Program Committee, and National Office content teams
  • Conduct systematic data collection and analysis of current and projected educational needs, learning products, and delivery models
  • Provide oversight in the design, development, execution, and evaluation of a comprehensive professional development program; guide team in program innovations
  • Partner with Marketing and Sales Cluster to develop and implement strategy for marketing all educational programming and pursuing new business opportunities to increase non-dues revenue through educational program and service offerings
  • Serve as ASHA’s Continuing Education Administrator (CEA) and oversee the management of the continuing professional education programs delivered by APD to assure that all offerings meet ASHA Continuing Education Board requirements 
  • Oversee budget management and the development and growth of APD and associated non-dues revenue
  • Coach staff in the ASHA Professional Development Team, and share cluster leadership of the Professional Education Cluster

Qualifications

Knowledge typically acquired through:

  • Graduate degree in relevant field; e.g., adult and continuing education, instructional design, association management, business management, administration, or allied health
  • Seven to ten years experience in adult education, and marketing and promoting educational programs preferably with a professional association
  • Experience supervising and coaching staff, working with teams and volunteer committees
  • Experience developing programs and products for adults
  • Experience and knowledge in distance learning and technology related to continuing education delivery

Scope and depth of technical skills/knowledge:

  • Demonstrated experience in designing and running an educational enterprise preferred
  • Experience developing and implementing continuing professional education programs that reflect current adult learning theory and consider trends related to the future of learning, content generation, and educational delivery options
  • Experience in business development
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and write technically complex reports and procedures, and technical documents including strategic marketing plans, marketing materials, educational/resource materials
  • Demonstrated ability to collect, interpret, and report statistical data
  • Experience in budget development and fiscal management, and managing revenue producing programs in a not-for profit organization
  • Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office
  • Skill and experience coaching direct line staff including recruitment, goal setting, and evaluation
  • Excellent writing skills; as well as strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills
