Job Description:

We are seeking a certified middle school Social Studies teacher (preferably dual-certified in ELL) to join our community. The chosen candidate will work exclusively with English Language learners who have recently arrived to the country. The teacher will work collaboratively with their colleagues to support the content and language development of the students. The academy and our classrooms operate under a model that is collaborative and project-based. We are looking for a hard-working, dedicated teacher who thrives off of teamwork, creativity and innovation. Our ideal candidate wants to continue to grow as a teacher, is resourceful, and is a reflective practitioner. This job reports to the International Academy Leader.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree; Master's degree preferred.
  • Certificates & Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education license required, or eligibility to obtain one. Candidates who also have English Language Learner certification are preferred.


Key Competencies:
  • Demonstrated experience and/or understanding of best practice for the instruction of English Language learners, including but not limited to differentiated instruction, hands-on and co-operative learning activities, and integrated content area and language development.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and/or experience in developing and implementing interdisciplinary projects, inquiry-based and project-based unit plans, student-centered instruction, and performance-based assessments.
  • Experience and/or willingness to use ongoing formative assessments and to monitor and analyze the data to drive instruction, differentiate for all students, and increase student achievement.
  • Willingness to integrate technology in the classroom.
  • Experience and/or willingness to collaborate with colleagues to design and deliver an effective advisory program that supports the diverse needs of every student.
  • Success in classroom management and commitment to student-centered learning.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, students, families and external partners, both orally and in writing.


Essential Functions:
  • Collaborate in discipline and interdisciplinary planning with an emphasis on project-based learning and student collaboration. Adapt curriculum and unit planning to include the integration of English literacy and language learning into content area instruction.
  • Lead curriculum-based classes that are student-centered, collaborative, involve experiential learning, are differentiate, and integrate content and language instruction.
  • Practice an open-door policy and develop best practices to facilitate professional growth and collaboration, including participation in inter-visitations.
  • Initiate partnerships and mentoring relations to enhance school experiences and develop external learning experiences. Collaborate with a guidance team around student social emotional needs and academic progress.
  • Lead an advisory group that includes coordinating and implementing team-building activities and advisory curriculum.
  • Work within non-traditional organization structure that meets the needs of English Language learners.
  • Participate in all team and interdisciplinary planning meetings.
  • Attend and actively participate in all professional development.
