Summary

Serves as a Mechanical Engineering Technician in the Instrument Systems and Technology Division of the Engineering and Technology Directorate at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD; supports mechanical engineering R&D in the design/development of experimental instruments, devices/system components for projects with undefined or uncertain performance requirements, incomplete/conflicting data, or involve techniques/components that differ from normal and documented uses.

Responsibilities

  • Manages, organizes, prioritizes, and oversees the workforce and work flow in multiple branch laboratories to meet critical milestones for multiple projects and programs that often having conflicting schedules.
  • Trains laboratory technicians and assistants on the correct use of laboratory equipment and mentor and schedule laboratory staff.
  • Ensures laboratory protocol, procedures, and safety documents are up to date, collected, and kept in a safe place; ensure laboratory benches, tools, and test equipment are calibrated prior to expiration.
  • Designs and develop experimental system components for specialized cryogenic and chemical safety equipment to meet performance requirements.
  • Develops and implement safe procedures and hardware for the fabrication and use of new technology for research and development projects.
  • Designs and document plumbing and electrical components to evaluate and commission new equipment in a semiconductor fabrication laboratory.
  • Provides authoritative advice to manufacturers, engineers, management, related organizations, and/or support contractors about space systems testing and evaluation.

Qualifications

Applicant must have one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade, which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above. Specialized experience is defined as professional working experience that included the following:

* Knowledge and understanding of heating, ventilation and air conditioning sufficient to perform basic maintenance/repair; welding experience (prefer orbital welding); and machining experience using a lathe/milling machine.

* Experience working responsibly with a professional engineer during all phases of the mechanical engineering research process (including input during the development of original hypothesis and proposal) including experience assuming full technical and operational responsibility for three or more of the following phases:
(a) development of a study plan, e.g., establishment of a procedure, outline of the methods to be used, and citation of the anticipated outcomes;
(b) resolution of any administrative concerns and otherwise planning for and organizing the practical aspects of the study or experiment;
(c) development of data through field processes;
(d) data refinement, verification and organization;
(e) analysis and evaluation; and/or
(f) preparation of reports which summarize the progress and results of projects and;
OR
* Experience maintaining a significant function or area of responsibility on an ongoing basis such as overseeing day-to-day operation of an isolated field site or other comparable subdivision of a first level unit or a significant multi-phase project or a discrete and ongoing technical function in a first level unit.
