Responsibilities

  • Apply Construction safety and Occupational health laws and regulations to ensure organizational compliance.
  • Conduct Safety evaluations of high risk construction sites for compliance with safety regulations.
  • Provide Safety Review of plans at various stages of a project.
  • Advise on site personnel of safety and environmental procedures.
  • Develop and conduct safety education program classes and seminars to develop safety knowledge for employees.

  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires the wearing of protective clothing and gear.
  • This position has a Business Travel requirement up to 25%.
  • CP-12 ACTEDS training is mandatory for personnel filling these positions.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes; 1) Managing safety or occupational health program elements; 2) Surveying workplaces, processes, products, or other systems for compliance with established safety and occupational health policies or standards and to identify potential new hazards; 3) Analyze high-risk activities involving construction and environmental health hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Physical Effort: The Safety Specialist performs on-site evaluations and inspections of new construction sites, barracks, and offices necessitating prolonged standing, bending, crouching, reaching and other physical demands. As stairs and aisles are often under construction, some physical coordination and balance is necessary, as well as on-site evaluation of field training exercises.
Working Conditions: On-site evaluation and inspection involve exposure to operating equipment and machinery, dust, fumes, mists ,and high-noise levels and adverse weather conditions. Personal protective gear may be required when conducting surveys and on-site evaluations
