The National Director, Development works as a collaborative partner with the Chief Marketing Officer and executive leadership to design and implement strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives on behalf of the organization. The National Director oversees the fundraising function of American Humane, providing leadership, coaching and day-to-day management of the fundraising team, as well as management of external vendors and partners. The National Director is responsible for maintaining a portfolio of high-level donor relationships.This position is based at American Humane's national headquarters in Washington, DC and reports directly to the Chief Marketing Officer.Role Expectations Accountable for working in collaboration with CMO and executive leadership to set and achieve philanthropic goals for the advancement of the organization. Lead and grow a high-performing fundraising team that works collaboratively with staff at all levels of the organization to meet programmatic and philanthropic needs. Effectively communicate how American Humane and its programs work to ensure the safety, welfare and well-being of animals and is the first to serve in promoting and nurturing the bonds between people and animals. Responsibilities Oversee and further develop American Humane's donor relations efforts and manage fundraising initiatives, including annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, and any capital campaigns. Provide effective leadership and support to staff in multiple locations to help them achieve desired outcomes and philanthropic goals; proactively tracks progress toward departmental and individual goals and adjusts tactics as needed to ensure strong performance for year-end. Build a broad network of prospective partners and donors. Maintain productive and collegial relationships and ongoing communication with professional, legal, tax and financial advisors, corporations, foundations and high-net worth individuals. Grow the major gifts program, developing a strong pipeline of donors capable of making six and seven figure gifts. Manage a portfolio of high-level donors and directly solicit from individual, corporate and foundation partners. Provide oversight to grow and manage the e-philanthropy and direct mail programs; collaborate with marketing team on the strategic development and implementation of e-philanthropy, direct mail and other donor-centric marketing initiatives. Provide oversight to ensure the strength of the donor operations functions, including: Raiser's Edge donor database and other donation tracking systems, gift acknowledgement and stewardship processes, and prospect research. Ensure timely and accurate reporting to funders. Deliver articulate presentations on American Humane's mission, programs and work. Represent American Humane at various events and meetings. Keep current on latest trends and issues in the philanthropic, non-profit and animal welfare sectors. Qualifications Bachelor's Degree required. Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible experience leading fundraising efforts in organizations of similar size and complexity to American Humane. CRFE certified. Proven experience managing a team of fundraising professionals in the nonprofit sector. Demonstrated track record of meeting or exceeding fundraising goals. Successful experience identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding high level donors. Willingness to be "hands-on" and not dependent upon a large staff. Excellent communication skills- both written and verbal, with the ability to briefly summarize the essence of issues and means to address them. Outstanding interpersonal skills with ability to remain flexible and shift priorities as needed. Takes a collaborative and proactive approach in addressing needs of the organization. Maintains a professional demeanor at all times. Demonstrates high levels of integrity, sound judgement and discretion. Familiarity with Raisers' Edge or other similar fundraising software.
