Summary

As an Architect, you will serve as an expert in architectural design and building construction, and as such devises, recommends and solves complex architectural problems as they arise in the course of project planning.

Location of position: Public Buildings Service (PBS), Office of Planning and Design Quality Wash., D.C.

Responsibilities

THIS ANNOUNCEMENT IS BEING AMENDED TO EXTENDED THE CLOSING DATE FROM 7/2/19 TO 7/10/19.

Interprets, adapts and applies design and construction principles and practices to solve problems and translate solutions into working templates for design and construction contracts accomplishing the desired work. Participates in the planning and execution of major projects, including but not limited to programming, design, construction, renovation, historic preservation, modernization and major facility upgrade and repair. Manages projects and related duties involved with engaging many other offices throughout GSA to program, design, and deliver the space and help assist customers with reaching the potential for their agency to reach its missions by reducing reliance on space and focusing on the human capital in the federal government. Participates in the formulation of strategic portfolio plans and feasibility studies, programming, design, and change management for the consolidation of federal agency customers. Serves as project manager on programming and design efforts related to mobile workplace program. Prepares detailed technical cost estimates for use in obtaining project funding and bid evaluation. Evaluates project objectives, performs complex technical calculations to identify the most efficient and cost-effective solutions to the unique problems posed by the project, and, pursuant to this, prepares necessary drawings, specifications and supporting documents. Represents the agency before professional organizations by presenting the position of the agency and the Government on issues involving, or pertaining to, architectural design and construction techniques. Prepares detailed technical cost estimates for use in obtaining project funding and bid evaluation. Prepares correspondence, technical reports, estimates, fact sheets, status reports and schedules as required to complete project assignments. Represents architectural subject matter expertise team in meetings with management and client representatives.

The GS-13 salary range starts at $99,172 per year. If you are a new federal employee, your starting salary will likely be set at the Step 1 of the grade for which you are selected.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR ARCHITECTS: Degree: architecture; or related field that included 60 semester hours of course work in architecture or related disciplines of which at least (1) 30 semester hours were in architectural design, and (2) 6 semester hours were in each of the following: structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems; OR a combination of college-level education, training, and/or technical experience. In addition to the Basic Requirements listed above, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level or higher in the Federal service. Specialized experience is professional architectural work in the design, construction, repair & renovation, restoration, rehabilitation, design or construction of major commercial or industrial facilities (multi-storied or high-rise office bldg. & related structures), managing all, or a large phase, of a major design or construction project.

Relocation-related expenses are not approved and will be your responsibility.

Travel expenses associated with interviews may be approved. Determinations will be made on a case-by-case basis.

  • Knowledge of professional architectural principles, concepts and practices applicable to a full range of design, layout, construction, repair and/or alterations to a variety of complex structures.
  • Ability to apply a wide range of qualitative and quantitative methods to the assessment and improvement of programs affected by the architectural specialty.
  • Ability to manage projects impacted by multiple competing priorities and requirements, using the knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools for developing, scheduling, coordinating, and managing projects and resources while applying financial management and budgeting knowledge, techniques, and innovation to achieve project results with on-budget and fiscal integrity.
  • Skill in oral and written communications to present recommendations to management and customers.
