"Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at George Mason University, within the College of Science (COS), invites applications from outstanding candidates for a term faculty position in organic chemistry beginning Fall 2019. Responsibilities: Primary teaching duties will include undergraduate and graduate level courses in organic chemistry. In addition, the faculty member should be able to teach physical organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, spectroscopy, and undergraduate laboratory courses. The course load for non-tenure track faculty is four courses per semester. The successful candidate will also perform standard departmental service activities, mentor students, and will be expected to establish collaborative relationships with Departmental faculty as well as with other groups within the University.

Required Qualifications: * Completion of a PhD in organic chemistry prior to starting this appointment; * Ability to deliver engaging and high-quality instruction in organic chemistry courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels; * Record of successful teamwork in a collaborative environment; * Commitment to excellence in teaching; and * Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Preferred Qualifications: * Prior teaching experience at the university level; and * Familiarity with instructional technology (e.g. Blackboard) and teaching in technology enhanced classrooms.

About Us: The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry offers undergraduate programs leading to the BA or BS (ACS certification) degrees in Chemistry, with optional concentrations in Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or Environmental Chemistry; a five-year BS/Accelerated MS degree; a traditional MS degree and a PhD in Chemistry. We also have research labs and faculty distributed over three campuses addressing two primary research thrust areas: Fairfax campus (sustainability - physical, solid state inorganic, organic, and analytical chemistry), the Science and Technology campus in Manassas (biomedical - biochemistry, synthetic organic and medicinal chemistry), and the Potomac Environmental Research & Education Center (sustainability - environmental chemistry). The research funding portfolio includes the Department of Defense, National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), other government and non-profit agencies, and private industry. Faculty in the department have close collaborations with researchers from a number of local and regional institutions, including the United States Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), NIH, Food and Drug Administration, Naval Research Laboratory, National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST), the United States Geological Survey (USGS), and Inova Health System among others.
