This position will be located in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania NMP, in the Maintenance Division. The purpose of this position is to perform electrical and HVAC maintenance to over 80 historic and non-historic structures and facilities.

  • Installs, modifies, and maintains, troubleshoots, test and repairs new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, and related fixtures, controls and equipment. Work may include backup generator systems, pump motor control wiring, replacing pump control components and replacement of pump motors. Examples of items worked on include: series, parallel, and compound lines and circuits for single and multiple phase alternating current; plugs, distribution panels, and outlet boxes; buzzer systems, thermostats, and flood-light systems. Voltages and ampere ratings vary from site to site, but most voltage ratings are less than 480v, and ampacities rated less than 400.
  • Repairs or replaces, but is not limited to, defective motors, transformers, ballasts, contactors, relays, breakers, fuses, timers, and related switchgear. The work may include the installation of feeder and branch circuits of all sizes in the free air and direct burial or incorrect sized conduit.
  • Performs basic installation, repair, maintenance, and service for intrusion and fire detection and control systems.
  • Repairs electrically powered tools and equipment.
  • Uses various testing equipment such as ammeters, voltmeters, meggers (insulation testers), and ohmeters.
  • Installs, modifies or makes repairs or maintains an extensive network of heating, cooling, and ventilating systems. These systems include large chillers, heat pumps, mini-split HVAC systems, gas, electric, and oil burning furnaces and boilers.
  • Installs, recognizes, the cause(s) of faulty equipment, ventilation duct work and makes repairs to a variety of complicated pumps, motors, motor controls, pressure controls, pulleys, belts and tensioners.
  • Performs as backup water plant operator and must be certified and/or experienced in water treatment operations.
    The incumbent serves as the backup operator which includes repairs, monitoring, chlorine testing and bacteriological water sample collecting. Maintains treated water levels in the potable water storage tanks by controlling pumps, meters and gauges.
  • Operates gasoline and diesel powered vehicles with a gross vehicle weight less than 26,000 pounds.

  • Licensure/Certification Requirement: This position is to perform electrical and HVAC maintenance and other diversified duties in the construction and maintenance of over 80 historic and non-historic structures and facilities. At least 40% of those duties will be electrically related and 50% will be HVAC related. To perform the electrical duties of this position, the incumbent is required to have a working knowledge of the National Electric Code and OSHA Standards governing electrical systems. To perform the HVAC duties of this position will require a license recognized by a state or federal institution for universal refrigerant EPA certification.     Physical Demands: Must be in good physical condition. Duties involve pushing, pulling, or the carrying of objects of varying sizes and shapes, weighing up to 100 pounds. Incumbent works in confined spaces such as attics, near ceilings, crawl spaces, and pits, etc. Duties may involve working from heights up to 50 fee such as on ladders, scaffolding or an aerial life.

    Working Conditions: Duties are performed both inside and outside in weather conditions varying from hot, humid summer heat to below freezing winter temperatures. The incumbent may be exposed to burns, cuts, bruises, smoke and fumes, flying particles when grinding or cutting, and the discomfort of wearing hoods and goggles. May be subject to cuts from hand powered tools and danger from flying splinters and chips. Other significant working conditions of this position are that the incumbent may be subject to call back and may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays. In addition, the incumbent may be required to work in other work crews as needed and as directed by their supervisor completing other assigned duties.
