This position is in the Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO). VTO provides planning, management, and direction for a research program to provide affordable, secure, and efficient energy technologies for transportation. VTO works with others across the transportation sector to develop new innovations across a broad portfolio including advanced batteries and electric drive, energy efficient mobility systems, advanced engines, and materials for vehicle light-weighting and efficient powertrains.

Responsibilities

As the General Engineer (VTO), GS-0801-12 you will:
  • Serves as a General Engineer with project manager responsibilities.
  • Oversees the technical planning of complex research, development, and demonstration activities.
  • Reviews proposals for cooperative efforts required for the research, development, and demonstration of energy efficient and renewable energy technologies, and recommends approval or declination to the supervisor or authorized selection panel officials.
  • Monitors contractor performance through regular meetings and evaluation of deliverables.
  • Advises supervisor and field activities on unusual, difficult or controversial technical matters.
  • Provides input to the preparation, justification, and support of the budget for assigned programs/projects and supplies justification as to the importance of efforts and the consequences of not providing the necessary funding.
  • Stays abreast of current and projected energy efficient and renewable energy technologies, as well as the state-of-the-art applications pertaining to the development of new products or scientific theories.
  • Makes site visits to laboratories, universities, and private industry where research is being conducted to evaluate the technical progress of research or development projects funded under assigned programs/projects.
  • Prepares comprehensive technical reports and participates in conferences and demonstrations to present technical reports.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience Requirements:

    • Knowledge and skill to serve as a team leader and as a member of panels, work groups, and conferences and to present in-depth technical briefings at all levels on a variety of issues relative to the assigned programs.
    • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing in order to coordinate and monitor activities performed by supporting organizations and contractors, write scopes of work and technical reports and present recommendations and findings.

    Educational Requirements:

    This position has a positive educational requirement, you MUST submit documentation verifying your education as described below and in the section titled Required Documents.

    BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR GS-0801 GENERAL ENGINEER:

    A. Degree: professional engineering. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
