Summary

About the Position:
Responsible for storing and issuing of linen throughout the entire Fort Belvoir Community Hospital. This is accomplished by receiving clean linen from the laundry contractor, placing it in storage in accordance with prescribed procedures, pulling linen in response to specific requests, placing it in carts, counting and restocking customer linen carts with scheduled deliveries/pickups to wards and clinics. Fast paced office directly serving patients and employees.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the receipt, storage, and placement of linens, including the operation of handling aids and equipment (carts and par-level carts) for distribution.
  • Arrange linen in prescribed locations in the division, for storage and ultimate issue in accordance with department's standard operating procedures.
  • Verify the amount and type (i.e. towels, scrubs) of linen as shown on the receipt document.
  • Utilize the standard scrub vending machines for exchange and reissuing linens.
  • Determine that sufficient supplies are available to complete assigned work and reports any discrepancies noted, follows up to ensure deadlines are being met.
  • Attempt to spot interruptions and reports to supervisors in the interest of the overall mission objectives.
  • Expedite linen operations where special problems in obtaining linens have developed.
  • Establish and maintains daily usage rates, for each linen item based on the customer requirements and justifications.
  • Inventory and replenish linen as required.
  • Initiate and complete inventory forms (receipt documents) following standard procedures and instructions.
  • Ensure records are maintained for issuance and receipt of linens.
  • Determine which items may salvaged or turned-in.
  • Incumbent must follow strict adherence to the following; standard inventory management procedures, Fort Belvoir Community Hospital Instructions, Joint Commission, OSHA, blood borne pathogen and various other infection control policies.

Conditions of Employment

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position may require the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position may be subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Linen Service Worker without more than normal supervision. Deliver, inventory and store linens in large volume for a large scale operation. Operate handling aids (carts) and equipment used in the receipt and placement of incoming linens. Initiate and complete inventory sheets and/or receipt documents for linens, verifying the amount and type (i.e. towels, scrubs etc). Scrub vending machines to replace and/or exchange linens. Maintain a clean and secure linen storage area. Spot inconsistencies or interruptions of service, and informed supervisors when needed. Identify and support new work methods to increase productivity. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort: Incumbent bends, stands, stoops and moves arms in handling bundles of linen, packages, or pushing carts which require handling of weight up to 200 pounds and picking up bundles of weight of approximately 25 pounds.
  • Working Conditions: The majority of the work is performed inside a well ventilated, lighted and heated area. May be required to ride in vehicles in clement/inclement weather. Exposed to dirt, dust, and possibility of physical injury (e.g., cuts, scrapes, bruises). Work includes rotational shift work.
