Summary

The position primarily serves as physical therapist assistant at the Perry Point VAMC in the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Service. The physical therapist assistant provides direct support to both inpatient and outpatient care.

Responsibilities

The physical therapist assistant accurately interprets physical therapist evaluations and treatment plans. The physical therapist treats referred patients using standard procedures and techniques, and implements physical therapy treatment plans, provides feedback for re-assesses by physical therapist at intervals, and modifies treatment plans accordingly. The therapist reports on patient's progress both orally and in writing to the physical therapist and interdisciplinary team members; maintains and replenishes adequate materials necessary for patient treatment; and is responsible for the clinical direction of physical therapy assistant students, and volunteers assigned to therapist's clinical area.

Work Schedule: 8am to 4:30pm or 7:30am to 4pm.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/25/2019.
Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education. Successful completion of an associate's degree from an accredited community college, junior college, college, or university in a physical therapy assistant education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).
Preferred Experience: experience over 2 years if possible.

Grade Determinations:
GS 07

Candidates must possess one year of experience equivalent to the GS-06 level

Examples of experience at the GS-06 listed below:

GS-6
(a) Experience. In addition to the basic requirements, 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
(b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
a. Knowledge of evidence based physical therapy practice.
b. Knowledge of physical therapy data collection and ongoing assessment techniques in order to perform specified aspects of patient evaluation and interventions.
c. Knowledge of basic biological and medical science to assess patient data; make a preliminary determination of their needs; develop treatment goals and objectives; and implement patient treatment plans.
(c) Assignment. Employees at this grade level serve as staff PTAs receiving little to no guidance from more experienced staff members for more complex patients and require general supervision by the treating physical therapist.

Physical Therapist Assistant GS 07

Assignment. Employees at this grade level serve as staff PTAs. This is the full performance level for the PTA. Assignments include: service as an active team member in a comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation program such as geriatrics, amputee, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, cardiac rehabilitation, aquatics, orthopedics, or wound care, etc.; prepare, provide, and supervise clinical training experiences for PTA students; and independently provide patient education to patients and their caregivers.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Ability to organize data, format that data into a presentation, and present information pertinent to patient care in formal or informal settings. Examples may include providing in-service training to staff or formal presentations to the treatment team.
2. Knowledge of contemporary physical therapy practice. This may be demonstrated through continuing education courses, in-service training, or journal article reviews.
3. Ability to independently implement selected components of interventions identified in the plan of care established by the physical therapist.

Physical Requirements: The Physical Therapist position has physical requirements that include: heavy lifting, 45 pounds and fingers, both hands required; reaching above shoulders; walking (8 hours); standing (8 hours); sitting/typing at computer workstation (4 hours); both legs required( 1 prosthetic); far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; ability to distinguish basic colors; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted), and mental and emotional stability. Sitting is required for meeting, administrative work and occasionally driving motor vehicle most of the day. May be exposed to infectious diseases, medical and psychiatric emergencies.
