An Overview
The Alexandria Sheriff's Office in the City of Alexandria, Virginia, offers a challenging opportunity in corrections and law enforcement. Deputy Sheriffs primarily work in a direct supervision Detention Center housing approximately 450 adult inmates. Deputy Sheriffs manage inmate living units, handle inmate discipline, respond to inmate requests, supervise inmates, and resolve inmates problems. Other responsibilities of Deputy Sheriffs outside the Detention Center include service of court papers; warrant execution, courthouse/courtroom security, and prisoner transportation.

The ability to work a 12.5 hour shift, during daytime or nighttime hours and during weekdays, weekends and holidays. Be physically fit. Applicants will be scheduled for a complete medical exam before being cleared by a physician to perform the duties required of a Deputy Sheriff. You will need to be flexible. There are occasions when you may be called in to report for work early or stay after your normal shift has ended. Newly hired deputies will be assigned to work inside the jail supervising male and female inmates who are committed to the jail for a variety of criminal offenses and for varying lengths of time. You will need to be a team player and have excellent communication and problem solving skills. You will need to be able to adapt to rapidly changing situations and may need to use physical force to protect inmates or other staff from injury or death.

Major Duties (Detention Center)

All newly hired Deputy Sheriffs start their career in the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center. Deputies will work in the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center on a 12.5 hour shift of either days or nights. All shifts work approximately 15 days per month to equal 87.5 hours per two-week pay period.

Supervision of inmate population and inmate activities to include meal service, recreation, program and work assignments
  • Maintaining control, order and security in the Detention Center
  • Manage inmate behavior and respond with appropriate discipline
  • Receives and screens visitors seeking admittance into the facility
  • Monitor and control ingress and egress onto the Public Safety Center grounds.
  • Responds to emergency incidents within the facility
  • Conduct searches of the inmate population and facility as required
  • Other duties as assigned.


Major Duties (Court Security and Civil Process)

Deputy Sheriffs who are assigned to Court Security and Civil Process work an 80 hour pay period. They are responsible for:
  • Courthouse and Courtroom Security
  • The opening process for court sessions
  • Monitoring the court while in session
  • Escort of prisoners to and from the courtroom
  • Transport of prisoners to and from the Detention Center
  • Operates the entrance screening post
  • Responds to emergency incidents within the courthouse and lockup
  • Serve civil process throughout the City of Alexandria
  • Warrant execution
  • Other duties as assigned

Major Duties (Inmate/Support Services)
Deputy Sheriffs who are assigned to Inmate/Support Services work an 84 hour pay period. They are responsible for:
  • Supervise and conduct on-site visits to inmates assigned to the Modified Work Release Program
  • Supervise inmates assigned to the Work Detail Program
  • Responsible for facility maintenance and other duties as assigned


Major Duties (Administrative Services)
Deputy Sheriffs who are assigned to Administrative Services work an 84 hour pay period. They are responsible for:
  • Conduct background investigations for Deputy Sheriff's applicants, civilians and contractors
  • Coordinate and conduct training for staff
  • Coordinate community relations events
  • Manage the office's fleet
  • Maintain and issue uniforms and equipment
  • Conduct Internal Affairs investigations
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum & Additional Requirements

Minimum: High School Diploma or GED; a United States Citizen, 21 years old at the time of appointment, some experience involving meeting and dealing with people under varying circumstances; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; candidates for positions in this class are required to meet age, height and weight standards as established by the Human Resources Department; State Department of Criminal Justice Services and Sheriff' Office training requirements; good character and background requirements; employees must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state of their residence.

Candidates for positions are required to pass the Minimum Standards Training at the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy.

Preferred Qualifications

Some knowledge of the geography of the City and the locations of municipal buildings, or the ability to acquire this knowledge; ability to apply appropriate laws, rules, regulations, and policies to specific situations; ability to deal courteously but firmly with the general public; ability to exercise sound judgment and common sense; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to prepare clear and concise reports; ability to physically perform the required tasks of the position; ability to act quickly, calmly and effectively in stressful situations, and a two-year college degree.

This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment testing to include:
Video Test, Mandatory Orientation, Background Investigation, Criminal Record Check, Driver's License Check, Drug Screen, Credit History Check, Polygraph Examination, Psychological Examination, Sheriff Interview, and Medical Examination

ALEXANDRIA SHERIFF'S OFFICE
ENTRY LEVEL VIDEO TEST

The Alexandria Sheriff's Office will offer the entry level video test for anyone who is seeking a Law Enforcement career as a Deputy Sheriff I on Thursday July 18, 2019. The test will begin promptly at 7:00 PM at the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center (WGTADC) located at 2003 Mill Road Alexandria, VA 22314. Candidates for this position should bring a government issued identification as well as proof of US Citizenship. To enter the secured perimeter of the Sheriff's Office and WGTADC candidates will have to go through security screening. No weapons are permitted on the property. Parking is permitted under the highway overpass or on Mill Road. No one will be allowed into the testing room after the test has begun. The test takes about three hours to complete. Please email chris.whelan@alexandriava.gov if you intend to take the test to ensure there is adequate seating. The testing room will be seated on a first come first served basis until the room is full. Candidates will be checked for open warrants. NO CELL PHONES, LAPTOPS, OR ANY OTHER TYPE OF ELECTRONIC DEVICE WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE TESTING ROOM.

Alcohol/Substance Abuse:
Current alcohol abuse is prohibited. Alcohol abuse is excessive drinking which impairs personal and work performance.

Current or recent use of illegal drugs or abuse of any legal drugs is prohibited. Any pattern of illegal drug used that indicates an ongoing, regular or recreational illegal use of a controlled substance. Legal drug use is medically prescribed drugs or drugs bought over the counter. Illegal drug use is non-medically prescribed use of any drugs but not limited to the following:

Criminal Activity
1. Any conviction of a felony. Commission of a serious detected or undetected felony (murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, auto theft, weapons charge, drug sales, illegal sex crimes, arson, etc...)
2. Conviction for possession or manufacturing of controlled substance(s) with intent to distribute.
3. Conviction of crime involving domestic violence.

Traffic
1. Any reason why the applicant cannot be insured to drive a motor vehicle.
2. Failure to possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment
3. Any reason why the applicant cannot be licensed to drive a motor vehicle.

Other
1. Membership or participation in any organization advocating the violent overthrow of the government of the United States.
2. Discrepancy of information or misinformation given on the background questionnaire or in reference to employment. Information on these forms will be verified through the polygraph examination and the background investigation.
3. Failure to keep an appointment at any step of the hiring process, without prior approval of the Sheriff's Office.
4. Failure to pass any part of the selection process.
5. Failure to meet the minimum standards described in this vacancy announcement.
6. Failure to notify the Office of a change in current address and/or telephone number.
7. Behavior(s) which do not necessarily reach the level of severity of the disqualifying information listed above but may still be a basis for rejection after consideration of each case on its individual merits.

Physical Requirement
The City of Alexandria also requires all public safety employees to pass a strict physical examination. This physical includes a stress test. Some of the components of the test are:

Weight (Body Fat Composition)
Males equal to or less than 20%
Females equal to or less than 26%

Eyesight
20/100 Uncorrected, with correction to 20/20 in each eye

Hearing
Normal (No use of a hearing aid

Resting Blood Pressure
