Duties & Responsibilities Medical Science & Computing is searching for a Bioinformatics Scientist to provide support to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This opportunity is full-time with MSC and is on-site in Bethesda, Maryland.Install and operate genome assembly tools, annotation algorithms, genome alignment algorithms on genomic data sets generated by high throughput sequencing technology (Illumina, PacBio, Nanopore) for de novo genome assembly and analysis. Implement components of a bioinformatics software pipeline to analyze next generation sequence data and generate statistical analysis and graphical display of data. High impact publications in the field of microbial genomics. Modify existing analysis software and to develop new approaches to solve problems; to accommodate unusual or unprecedented analytical requirements during the conduct of genomics research projects.Master new software rapidly and to instruct others in their use. Interface and communicate effectively with IT personnel to troubleshoot problems, improve standard operations, develop and expand computing resources. Perform work on collaborative genomic sequencing projects. Assist in the writing, figure generation, publication of manuscripts. Take primary responsibility for archiving sequence datasets in public repositories, including NCBI. Operate and communicate effectively in a group, team-oriented working environment.Work with and support others in a collegial, respectful, and interactive working manner. Interact with field service engineers and field application specialists for repair and optimization of computational technologies, where appropriate.Stay current with regards to latest protocols, applications, scientific methodology, sample handling and processing relevant to next generation DNA sequencing technologies. Assist in management of technical and scientific operations of genomics research group to achieve project goals. Work independently, multi-task, be goal-oriented, and communicate effectively. Formulate sound conclusions, to prepare reports summarizing research results, analytical methods used, interpretation of results, and to identify critical scientific questions that require further study. Take initiative to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of daily operations to develop best practices and standard operating procedures for analyzing data in a timely and sound manner. Display flexibility and personal initiative to explore new strategies to solve problems and accomplish project goals. Work with and interact with post-baccalaureate IRTAs, graduate students, post- doctoral researchers, principal investigators, lab chiefs, and technicians. Requirements Doctoral degree in genomics, bioinformatics, computational biology, microbiology or related discipline with additional post-doctoral experience in bioinformatics and genomics. Practical knowledge of, and skill in, computerized data analysis, database management, and computer programming sufficient for the analysis of genomics datasets, including experience with the operation and maintenance of computers with Linux, Mac OS, or Microsoft operating systems. Programming experience in environments such as Linux, Bioconductor R, perl and/or python. Competency with statistics and quantitative analyses. Must have attention to detail, strong organizational and troubleshooting abilities, strong written and oral communication skills. Understanding of the theories, principles, practices, and methods of high throughput DNA sequencing, genome assembly, and genomics analysis. Experience with microbial genomics analysis, including genome assembly, refinement, and polishing; treatment of sequencing errors; annotation of open reading frames, transcriptional start sites, and mobile genetic elements; sequence variant analysis; phylogenetic analysis, including Bayesian approaches; analysis of mutational rates and mutational spectra; RNA-seq data analysis.
