Responsibilities

  • You will diagnose, locate and repair malfunctions to the main operating mechanical components of large, complex heating, ventilation; air conditioning, and refrigeration systems (HVAC).
  • You will disassemble and repair a variety of components including compressors, evaporators, condensers, cooling coils, air handlers, bearings, water control valves, air dampers, etc.
  • You will lubricate moving parts and replace air filters, v belts, electrical motors, pulleys, sheaves, bearings, fan shafts, etc.
  • You will test for refrigerant leaks and use a refrigerant recovery/ recycling station, to Environmental Protection Agency standards to safely reclaim, recycle and store the refrigerant before repairs can be made.
  • You will conduct visual and audible examination of equipment components by applying prescribed test procedures and equipment, and by exploration of probable reasons for equipment failure.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • Call back and emergency overtime are regular requirements of this position.
  • You may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
  • You may be required to work shift work.
  • You may be required to serve on-call duty on a rotation basis, required to carry a duty cell phone/duty pager and must remain available to respond on site to after-hour emergencies within two hours.
  • You may be reassigned to a similar position at any site or workstation within the commuting area as a condition of employment.
  • You may be assigned to perform tasks in a non-trade related field as an assistant/helper as workload requires.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: The ability to perform the duties of an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic with out more than normal supervision as demonstrated by the following: 1) Diagnosing, locating, and repairing malfunctions to the main operating mechanical components of large heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems (HVAC) such as compressors, evaporators, condensers, cooling coils, air handlers, water control valves, and air dampers; 2) Using trade tools and test equipment such as voltage, amperage, and ohm meters, electronic refrigerant leak detectors, temperature gauges, capacitors, and analyzers; and 3) Performing maintenance, calibration, modification, installation, repairing and replacing analog and direct digital controls (DDC) systems and equipment.

This position uses the Direct Hire Authority for Certain Competitive Service positions to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.

This position may be considered ESSENTIAL and you will be required to report for duty or held in a duty status to provide support before, during and/or after special emergency situations, such as, but not limited to, destructive weather (including snow removal), disasters, or periods of increased security threat.

Recruitment incentives may be authorized to eligible new hires.

A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee. A relocation incentive may be authorized.

A 40 hour work week is typical for this position.

Physical effort is required to maneuver equipment in and out of specific locations while dismantling and reassembling. The work requires frequent carrying and setting-up of parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Occasionally may lift items weighing over 50 pounds with assistance. Hoists, holders, and pulleys are operated when removing units such as large compressors, condensers, and chillers. The work requires making repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms where the parts of systems worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places; therefore, stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling are frequent and may be for long periods of time.

The incumbent works both inside and outside, sometimes in bad weather, on top of tall buildings, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Areas are noisy, dirty, dusty and greasy. Personal protective equipment such as protective clothing, helmets, goggles, respirators, etc. are required to be worn when there is a possibility of exposure to toxic refrigerants during regular maintenance and repair or when making emergency repairs.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
