Project Overview A project of The Pew Charitable Trusts based in Washington, DC, Stateline reports on state and local issues. In addition to publishing original content every weekday, Stateline collects state and local stories from around the country for its daily newsletter and produces special reports, such as its annual State of the States series. Stateline's readership includes thousands of state officials, policy makers, business leaders, journalists, students of state government and ordinary citizens. The content appears at www.pewstates.org/stateline; the stories also run on news sites and in newspapers around the country. Position Overview We are looking for an enthusiastic reporter to pursue groundbreaking in-depth features and investigative work on state policy matters. The reporter focuses on issues facing state and local governments, with an emphasis on how different states are grappling with the same challenges and on broad trends that might be invisible to readers in individual states. We are looking for someone who enjoys working with a team, wants to develop as a journalist, and is eager to help fill the gaps in important state policy coverage. Strong story idea generation is critical to success in this role. The reporter travels regularly within the United States. This position reports to the manager, deputy managing editor and is based either in Washington, DC, or another location in the United States relevant to state policy issues. It has a set timeframe that could be extended based on the success of the program, funding sources, and board decisions on continued support. Responsibilities Generate strong story ideas. Produce groundbreaking in-depth features and investigative work that clearly demonstrates the practical effects of state policy decisions. Demonstrate expertise on assigned state policy issues and develop a wide array of contacts on assigned beat, potentially covering energy and the environment, but possibly in another area of need. Identify data or content for multimedia and data-driven stories. Use social media to promote individual stories and boost Stateline's readership. Requirements Bachelor's degree required. At least 4 years of journalism experience. Engaging writing style and experience writing in-depth stories. Ability to connect policy decisions to readers' lives. Demonstrated knowledge of state and federal government. Demonstrated ability to generate strong story ideas. Ability to meet deadlines and ensure accuracy. Command of Associated Press style. Ability to think strategically and creatively, juggle multiple priorities, adjust to changing circumstances, organize time efficiently, stay attentive to details, and identify resources for projects. Capacity to fit into a creative, fast-paced culture that emphasizes excellence, collegiality, and teamwork. Accustomed to working as a member of a team and individually to meet goals.
