POSITION SUMMARY Democracy Fund seeks a Director of People who will nurture our values-driven culture while also maturing our fast-paced organization's people systems and functions to bring out the best of our diverse staff dedicated to making our democracy work better. The Director of People will report to the Chief Operating Officer, play a key role on several of the organization's leadership teams, including our diversity, equity and inclusion council, and share our commitment to strengthening democracy. As a believer in the potential of people, you will engage with all levels of our community, using your experience working across all aspects of the people function to develop, refine, and execute a variety of people processes and support the success of all Democracy Fund team members. The successful candidate must possess a combination of strategic abilities and practical experience in applying those strategies to the people function. You will bring broad-picture thinking, creativity and a high-level of digital literacy to create data-driven analyses that will inform decision-making and drive process development. Yours will be a "hands-on" role, however, requiring a commitment to, and care for, the details critical to the effective daily operations of a people team. You will develop strong networks among peers within The Omidyar Group (TOG), collaborating on best practices. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES PEOPLE STRATEGIES Collaborates with the Chief Operating Officer to proactively identify and implement goals, strategies, and process improvements to further develop a people function committed to continuous improvement, integrity, excellence, and results. Researches best practices in employee engagement and performance; responsible for the design, execution and ongoing management of the organization's performance management process, including the selection and implementation of the optimal technology supports to facilitate performance planning. Manages the semi-annual performance review process. Contributes to the high organizational commitment to living and nurturing organizational values of humility, collaboration, learning, integrity, and impact, ensuring a diversity, equity, and inclusion approach is consistently applied in our organizational culture. Brings best-practice research, tool-building, and emotional intelligence in emphasizing respect, empathy, and honest dialogue in our community. PEOPLE SYSTEMS Onboarding: Oversees the delivery, execution, and refinement of Democracy Fund's onboarding process, working closely with the talent acquisition professional and department teams to ensure proper grounding for new employees' success over their lifespan at Democracy Fund. Total Rewards: Manages the enhancements and innovations for organization's benefits and compensation programs, including the bi-annual compensation benchmarking survey and its implications for the organization. Serves as the liaison between the organization and the various service providers or third party administrators. Identifies the need for program or process improvements; leads the evaluation and selection of new service providers, manages the annual open enrollment and trainings. Serves as the staff's primary point of contact on compensation and, benefits policies and procedures, and all other HR-related questions. Employee Engagement: Models effective interpersonal and listening skills to develop the necessary relationships with team members at all levels, serving as their first point of contact for people issues. Uses clear, relatable written and spoken communication skills, with an awareness of style and cultural differences, to successfully assess and resolve a variety of matters. Employee Learning: Assists staff in developing their professional and personal capacity by identifying the appropriate resources from the Fund's extensive learning and professional development program offerings. Evaluates and makes recommendations for revised or new program offerings based on business needs. Employee Data: Creates and maintains confidential employee files in accordance with best practice and legal requirements; ensures the accuracy of data and information contained in the HRIS platformed maintained by Democracy Fund's professional employer organization (PEO). Policy and Compliance: Manages the revision or creation of relevant people policies for the organization, through periodic reviews and a proactive assessment of policy needs. Ensures the Fund's compliance with federal, DC and other state employment laws, where applicable. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS A deep passion for strengthening American democracy. Bachelor's degree required and a current HR certification, eg, SPHR, SHRM-SCP required. A specialized certification (eg, CBP, CCP, CEBS, etc.) or relevant graduate study preferred. A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in human resources required, including 3-5 years as an HR team leader or HR manager. Nonprofit experience highly preferred. Experience providing people team services to every level in an organization, preferably in a comparably sized organization, ie between 50 and 100 employees; experience collaborating with complementary operational functions, ie, finance, IT. Demonstrated adaptability and success working in a diverse, inclusive and fast-paced community. Expertise as a practitioner in two (2) or more core areas of human resources: employee relations, total rewards (benefits and compensation), performance management, and talent acquisition and retention is required. Familiarity with, or exposure to, other key people functions, eg, HR strategy, organizational effectiveness, employee engagement, learning and development, diversity, equity, and inclusion, preferred. Demonstrated proficiency in a suite of business applications (eg, word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, etc.), in order to create and maintain efficiencies in people processes and conduct analyses as the basis for recommendations to the COO and organizational leadership. Demonstrated working knowledge of HR information systems (HRIS), as well as an understanding of the interface between HR and financial systems required. Experience with applicant tracking systems (eg, Jazz or comparable platform), self-service or PEO platforms which administer payroll, benefits, and other functions, as well as other HR technologies eg, Saba Halogen or a comparable enterprise HR software highly preferred.
