TALMAR Executive Director Job Description The Executive Director is the key management leader of Therapeutic Alternatives of Maryland (TALMAR). The Executive Director is responsible for the planning, organizing, staffing, motivating, directing, and management of a farm-based horticultural therapy program committed to serving teenagers and adults, including military Veterans, who have a wide variety of disabilities. There are various training programs in sustainable agriculture that service veterans with mental health challenges.While TALMAR is an independent nonprofit entity, it is located on 10 acres of Baltimore County's Cromwell Valley Park and is partially supported by the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Park's Office of Therapeutic Recreation Services. The Executive Director liaisons with the County to provide programs and services.The Executive Director reports to TALMAR's Board of Directors. MISSION:TALMAR (Therapeutic Alternatives of Maryland), estalished in 1998, is dedicated to the mission of enhancing health for all people of all ages and abilities. TALMAR offers an innovative therapeutic environment providing work skills development, vocational, educational and recreational programming in horticulture and agriculture. All programs are designed particularly for individuals with physical, mental or developmental challenges that impact their health and well-being. DUTIES:Identifies grant sources and writes grants. Builds relationships with County officials, foundations, corporations, the Veterans' Administration, individuals and community organizations for funding, donations of time and talent, and other support. Hires and manages staff, including a Farm Manager, Horticultural Therapists, an agricultural instructor, a horticultuiral activites coordinator as well as farm hands and office staff. Manages and coordinates staff, volunteer and professional relationships in support of TALMAR activities which are in the areas of: (a) sustainable farming, ie growing vegetables using sustainable and organic practices, producing eggs safely, and selling vegetables, flowers and eggs in TALMAR's CSA (community-supported agriculture), at farmers' markets, and to local grocery stores as opportunity arises; (b) horticultural therapy - for individuals and groups; (c) education - courses for local community college, training programs for military veterans, workshops for interested individuals, and internships for local college and high school students. Oversees financial operations and supervises the accountant in payroll, accounts receivables, expenses, tax filings, legal compliance. Assists in the preparation of a budget while operating within budget guidelines.Represents TALMAR in a variety of settings in order to cultivate advocacy and support for TALMAR's mission, operations and programs. Oversees the creation and distribution of marketing materials for TALMAR, both on-line and printed. REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING: Bachelor's degree (preferred); Successful completion of various professional development courses in related fields would be beneficial.Experience in senior level management roles in a non-profit, including grant writing, fund-raising, personnel management; minimum of 2 years.A solid knowledge of accounting, budgeting, financial management and marketing. Proven track record of success in maintaining good relationships with staff, board, donors and community. Successful completion of the criminal background check.
