Job SummaryEvaluates drugs prescribed by physicians for appropriateness of dose, therapeutic efficacy, allergy, drug interaction, and contraindications; processes prescriptions through insurance company and handles DUR rejects, pre-authorizations, etc.; performs final check on all prescriptions, ensuring accurate input, labeling,and dispensing; and, provides counseling and drug information to patients and physicians.MedStar Pharmacy is committed to providing world-class, compassionate care to every patient, every time, at every touch point. All associates are accountable for their role in meeting patient experience standards.Minimum QualificationsEducation/TrainingLicensed as a pharmacist in the State of Maryland or District of Columbia (DC).Experience1 year pharmacy experience, preferably in retail.License/Certification/RegistrationCurrent Maryland or DC Pharmacist license, including Immunization/Vaccination Certification and registration with the board of pharmacy in that state or district.Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesVerbal and written communication skills. Basic computer skills preferred.Primary Duties and ResponsibilitiesActs as the "pharmacist in charge" in the absence of the manager: directing workflow patterns, ensuring that daily responsibilities are carried out by assigned staff, resolving issues requiring management intervention, and performing routine oversight of pharmacy operations.Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.Performs final check on all completed prescriptions, verifying the accuracy of input, labeling, and dispensing; makes corrections as necessary; maintains refill and narcotic logs, and prescription files.Performs other duties as assigned.Processes prescriptions in the dispensing system; evaluates prescriptions for appropriateness of dose, therapeutic efficacy, allergy, drug interactions, and contraindications; handles DURs, rejects, preauthorizations, etc.; communicates with third party payors to troubleshoot issues relating to coverage, reimbursement, etc.Provides clinical information and guidance to physicians and allied health professionals as appropriate to provide safe, prompt, and accurate dispensing of all prescriptions; calls physicians and follows up on refill requests; notifies physicians of Rx's requiring pre-authorizations and discusses alternatives as appropriate.Provides patient counseling as appropriate on a patient-by-patient basis.About MedStar HealthMedStar Health is dedicated to providing the highest quality care for people in Maryland and the Washington, DC, region, while advancing the practice of medicine through education, innovation and research.
