Responsibilities

The staff Anesthesiologist is accountable to Chief, Anesthesiology, to provide the most effective delivery of anesthetic care throughout the medical center in compliance with VA and VHA Directives and the Joint Commission accreditation standards. The staff Anesthesiologist provides a variety of services including pre-operative patient exam and assessment, intra-operative care, and post-operative care. The staff Anesthesiologist provides anesthesia-related direct patient care in all functional areas of the OR, PACU, ICU, ward, and out of OR procedural settings as needed to include on-call coverage. Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Assess, consult, and prepare patients for anesthesia including pre-operative patient exam and assessment
  • Deliver insensibility to pain during surgical, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures and the management of patients so affected
  • Monitor and restore homeostasis during the perioperative period as well as homeostasis in the critically ill, injured, or otherwise seriously ill patient
  • Provide diagnosis and treatment of painful syndromes
  • Perform clinical management and teaching of cardiac and pulmonary resuscitation
  • Evaluate respiratory function and application of respiratory therapy in all its forms
  • Supervise, Teach, and evaluate performance of both medical and paramedical personnel in anesthesia, respiratory, and critical care
  • Conduct research and collaborate in research efforts at the clinical and basic science level
  • Involve with administrative functions in hospitals, medical schools, and outpatient facilities necessary for implementation of these responsibilities
  • Involve in quality improvement efforts
  • On-call coverage is required
Work Schedule: Full Time, typically Mon-Friday daytime hours. On-Call required which may include periodic after-hours work.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/26/2019.

Basic Requirements: UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT, COPY OF LICENSE, AND DOCMUMENT OF RESIDENCY TRAINING REQUIRED: If you do not submit the supporting documents, your application may not be reviewed.
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
  • Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
  • Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
  • For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.
  • Licensure and Registration: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies are:
  • Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA), in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or
  • Other residencies or their equivalents which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training.
  • English Language Proficiency: Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by VA Policy.
Physician Staff Requirements (Staff Physician): None beyond the basic requirements. The individual must qualify to perform duties as a physician, have completed an accredited residency and/or possess experience which has qualified the individual to perform general duties and some specialized functions and procedures without supervision. Staff physicians may also include attendings who train physician residents assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: The physician is expected to be able to travel throughout the campus of the VA Medical Center which has 6 adjoining buildings with a maximum of 5 levels to perform his/her duties. Able to use equipment in the clinic examination room, office, medical ward and conference room(s) without difficulty.
