Summary

This position is located in the Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR), Smithsonian Facilities (SF), Smithsonian Institution. The incumbent works under the supervision of the Motor Vehicle Operator Supervisor. The incumbent responsibility is to operate gasoline and diesel powered vehicles with gross vehicle weights of 22,000 lbs. or more that transport supplies and materials.

  • Operates a stake truck with a hydraulically-operated tail/lift gate and uses the power takeoff to transfer engine power to the tail/lift gate.
  • Operates buses with a capacity of more than 20 passengers, regardless of gross vehicle weight.
  • Operators drives a bus over predetermined routes and arrives at and departs from pick up and discharge points at scheduled times.
  • Operates loads and unloads the vehicle by hand, sometimes requiring help from other workers.
  • Operates passenger-carrying vehicles, such as shuttle buses or sedans and station wagons, on fixed routes or as directed.

Physical Requirements:

As a Motor Vehicle Operator, more than moderate physical effort is used in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. More than moderate physical effort is required in the operation of additional controls, the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 20 pounds and the occasional handling of objects weighing over 50 pounds while loading and unloading cargo.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applications will first be evaluated to determine whether the following screen out element is met:

  • Ability to do the work of the Motor Vehicle Operator without more than normal supervision.

  • If an applicant meets the screen-out element, the following Job Elements will be evaluated:
    • Ability to do the work of a motor vehicle operator.
    • Ability to operate a motor vehicles.
    • Knowledge of work practices (including keeping things neat, clean, and in order).
    • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation).
    • Ability to safely drive motor vehicles.
    • Ability to be reliable and dependable.

    Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of two category groups based on job-related criteria:

    Best Qualified Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.

    Qualified - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

    This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-veterans within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no veteran in that category is passed over to select a non-veteran in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied.

    Veterans who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
