Requirements

The Linguistics Department at Georgetown is seeking a Digital Humanities Specialist (DH Specialist) for a part-time (12-15 hours/week) position, who will assist the Principal Investigator in the NEH funded project "A Linked Digital Environment for Coptic Studies". The project aims to scale up coverage and usability of digital resources for Coptic, the language of first millennium Egypt.

With a focus on documentation oriented to external users and dissemination of results online, the position of DH Specialist will maintain personal contact with users of project data and tools in the Humanities, as well as assisting in the development and curation of project resources. The DH Specialist will manage project resources, provide accessible explanations, collect and evaluate user feedback (including usage statistics), and advertise the work in appropriate forums. The DH Specialist will also document standards and software used by the project and maintain GitHub repositories, as well as operate project publication workflows, participate in editorial review and perform data quality assurance as needed.

Other key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Project Resource Management:
  • Managing release workflows of new data, assignment of resources during data curation.
  • Applying and developing metadata standards to document project holdings.
  • Maintaining project repositories online.
  • Outreach and coordination with other projects to establish and apply Linked Open Data standards connecting project products with other relevant initiatives.
  • Publishing and distributing print and digital media.


Website Administration and User Outreach:
  • Gathering requirements for website functionality, implementing minor changes or defining tasks for software engineers for larger changes
  • Managing project blog and advertising resources online as needed.
  • Responding to and soliciting user feedback for project interfaces.
  • Analyzing usage statistics.


Documentation and Evaluation:
  • Collecting advisory board feedback
  • Managing project wiki and documentation
  • Developing and validating annotation guidelines
  • Evaluating tool performance, error analysis and error correction


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Experience working with historical data in a digital context.
  • Good knowledge of Coptic is strongly preferred, however, applicants with knowledge of other major languages of antiquity, such as Greek, with a willingness to learn Coptic, will also be considered.
  • Applicants able to work physically in the DC area are preferred; however, remote work will also be considered, provided the applicant is able to participate in video conferences regularly and project funded travel to physical meetings periodically.


Preferred qualification:
  • Familiarity with XML standards such as TEI XML, work on other digital edition projects, and basic scripting skills, for example in Python, are a plus.
