Category IHS Academic Relations DescriptionThe Institute for Humane Studies (IHS) seeks a Managing Director of Academic Relations to support a growing national community of university scholars committed to exploring and advancing a deeper understanding of ideas in the classical liberal tradition. Reporting to the President, the Managing Director of Academic Relations is responsible for leading IHS's Faculty Liaison (FL) for current faculty, Graduate Liaison (GL) for aspiring faculty, and its Free Speech and Open Inquiry (FSOI) initiative. The IHS vision for the Academic Relations capability is that graduate students and faculty in the IHS scholarly community have the material support and intellectual connections they need to thrive as teacher-scholars in the classical liberal tradition, and advance a deeper understanding of the principles and practices of a free and open society. Our vision for the FSOI initiative is that the college campus is a place where faculty and students eagerly engage in a fearless search for truth through the open and civil exchange of ideas. The Managing Director supervises directors of the FL, GL, and FSOI teams. With support from the relevant directors, the Managing Director is ultimately responsible for leading exemplary performance from the entire Academic Relations team. The Managing Director is also responsible for establishing and maintaining productive cross-team relationships, particularly with the Managing Director of Programs and the Senior Director of Program Operations. The Managing Director will support the President and Foundation Relations team by assisting with the development of grant proposals related to relationship management, faculty-graduate student programs, and the FSOI initiative. The Managing Director may also be responsible for maintaining a modest portfolio of faculty relationships. The Managing Director must be a strategic, innovative leader with superior communication skills and a demonstrated ability to proactively identify and seize opportunities for team improvement, organizational growth, and measurable progress toward positive change in higher education. The person holding this position works closely with other senior directors and executive leadership, playing an integral role in meeting the organization's vision and strategic goals. Primary responsibilities: Lead a team of 12-15 staff; supervise and mentor team members from the Faculty Liaison (FL), Graduate Liaison (GL), and Free Speech and Open Inquiry (FSOI) initiative, assigning projects based on individual strengths and addressing gaps in the team's capabilities with employee development Work collaboratively with senior and executive leadership to set and achieve an ambitious program of positive change in American higher education Establish and maintain clear lines of communication and highly collaborative partnership with the Managing Director of Programs and the Senior Director of Program Operations Refine and execute a capability to more effectively develop long term and productive relationships with academics that advances the organization's vision Refine and execute the organization's efforts to support free speech and open inquiry on American college and university campuses Work strategically and collaboratively with allied organizations and foundations who work in the higher education arena Support the President and Foundation Relations team by assisting with the development of fundraising proposals related to relationship management, faculty-graduate student programs, and the FSOI initiative Establish and deliver on measurable goals for the FL, GL, and FSOI teams Ensure a manageable and predictable work flow and optimal knowledge-sharing within the FL, GL, and FSOI teams and across the organization Ensure written materials and communications coming from the FL, GL, and FSOI teams support the organization's brand narrative Administer departmental budget The ideal candidate will have: A Master of Arts and/or PhD in the humanities or social sciences and 5+ years' experience in higher education A demonstrated record of success in developing and executing dynamic, high-stakes programs A demonstrated record of success in leading a team Knowledge of and appreciation for the classical liberal tradition Deep familiarity with and communications experience within higher education Proficiency in proposal and budget development Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills, with the ability to write persuasively and quickly Must be an innovative thinker with a focus on strategy and the ability to smoothly implement new initiatives Strong organizational skills, with an ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines Exceptional interpersonal skills, with a natural ability to collaborate well with diverse colleagues across a range of functions Founded in 1961 and affiliated with George Mason University, IHS is a nonprofit educational organization that supports and partners with professors committed to exploring and advancing a deeper understanding of ideas within the classical liberal intellectual tradition and advancing higher education's core purpose of intellectual discovery and human progress.
