Summary

The James H. Quillen VA Medical Center is seeking a well-qualified physician to serve our Veteran patients' needs in our Marion Community Based Outreach Clinic located in Marion, Virginia. This is a part-time opportunity that will cover the clinic's operating hours of 8:00AM - 4:30 PM Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Responsibilities

The selected physician will be charged with providing outpatient-only primary care for eligible Veterans in the Marion, VA community. The required skill-set includes current primary care clinical proficiency, willingness and ability to encourage teamwork, the ability to implement new initiatives while maintaining high standards of performance. A broad working knowledge and experience with VA policies and procedures is desirable. VA Primary Care providers are responsible for coordinating all aspects of the patients' care, making referral to appropriate specialists, ordering procedures, ordering and monitoring all medications in addition to handling all of their patients acute needs.

Work Schedule: The tour of duty will be within the clinic's operating hours (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM). The hours may be flexible and all tours are at the discretion of the Chief, Primary Care and Community Medicine.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/28/2019.
Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Licensure and Registration: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training Requirement: Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • English Language Proficiency: Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience: Board Certification in Family or Internal Medicine is preferred. Current or prior VA service/experience is also preferred.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: Physicians should be physically and mentally capable to perform the examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan, and educate residents. Physical activity includes sitting, standing (for up to 2 hours), walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (intermittently, 45 lbs or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. Physician should be emotionally and mental stable and capable of performing the duties of the position.

Additional information

Education and length of practice will be considered by a Compensation Panel in determining the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay).

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of 26 days per leave year (1 day per pay period).
