Responsibilities

As an Administrative Operations Assistant within the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Science Center , some of your specific duties will include:
  • Organizes extensive budget data pertaining to a wide variety of functions and reviews estimates to ensure that amounts are within established guidelines and makes adjustments as needed for additional anticipated expenditures.
  • Gathers, extracts and compiles data for use in recurring reports; and provides status updates and responds to inquiries regarding a wide variety of budget practices and procedures.
  • Trains others and provides advice on budget clerical and technical work carried out in the office.
  • Establishes and revises office budget and financial procedures, methods and approaches for the performance of office budget execution work.
  • Examines accounts, compiles and verifies the accuracy of accounting data by tracing transactions entered and prepares worksheets to reflect the source of discrepancies and recommends corrective action.
  • Purchases a variety of scientific testing services; reviews specification outlined by the customer and suggests information on purchase description to improve specification requirements.
  • Prepares one-of-a kind reports that involve a wide variety of problems, conflicts and inconsistencies from information in various documents.

If you are qualifying based on specialized experience, you must meet the requirements listed below:

For GS-06 :

Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-6 level: One year of specialized experience in or directly related to this position that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. To be creditable, the required specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service. Example of GS-5 level work: Performs standard and nonstandard assignments involving different and unrelated processes or methods in varying sequence; work requires extensive knowledge of rules, operations, or business practices. Follows accepted practices in resolving nonrecurring problems and meeting deadlines; completed products are evaluated for effectiveness in meeting goals; extensive guidelines in the form of instructions, manuals, and regulations are applied.

**OR applicants may substitute successful completion of 1/2 year of appropriate graduate level education (9 semester hours, 13.5 quarter hours or the equivalent) in a field of study directly related to the work of this position for the required one year of specialized experience. Graduate education may be credited only when it is clearly directly related to the work of this position and equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position.

For GS-07 :

Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-7 level: One year of specialized experience in or directly related to this position that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. To be creditable, the required specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the Federal service. Examples of GS-6 level work: 1) Processes a wide variety of transactions subject to different sets of rules and regulations. Regarded as an expert source of information on processing transactions; completed work is reviewed for conformance with policy and regulatory requirements; numerous and varied guidelines are adapted and applied; 2) Performs a segment of the evaluative work of an administrative function; identifies issues or problems and seeks alternative solutions consistent with applicable regulations. Works independently in completing assignments; completed work is reviewed for effectiveness in meeting goals; guidelines such as regulations, evaluation criteria, and precedents have gaps in specificity.

**OR applicants may substitute successful completion of 1 year of appropriate graduate level education (18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours, or the equivalent) in a field of study directly related to the work of this position for the required one year of specialized experience. Graduate education may be credited only when it is clearly directly related to the work of this position and equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position.
