Requirements

The Department of Biology , in Georgetown College, at Georgetown University, laboratory design promotes meaningful and productive interactions, while numerous study spaces support innovative and collaborative education. This, combined with their strong ties to the research-oriented Georgetown Medical School, the NIH, and other universities in the DC area, provide an exceptional environment for learning and scholarship.

The position of Research Associate (RA) is a renewable term greater than six months' position and will assists with the management of Dr. Mann's lab and field research; which includes four (4) graduate students, up to ten (10) undergraduates, and several volunteers. Responsibilities will include cleaning data for the database, uploading and accessing data, training students on data, lab tasks and various projects, scheduling meets and preparing for those meetings. The RA digitizes, reformats, and consolidates data for undergraduate students', graduate students', and postdoctoral researchers' projects. The RA orders supplies for the lab and assists with other logistics- such as getting research posters printed. The specialist responds to inquiries about our research and assists in interviewing potential student researchers. The Research Associate is also directly involved in scientific endeavors and may pursue independent research; and may be involved in field research in addition to lab activities. Other key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Database Management
  • Cleaning, reformatting, digitizing and consolidating data.
  • Checking data projects of others (that these are done correctly).
  • Uploading data to database.
  • Downloading and formatting data for research projects, as needed.


Digitization
  • Management of photo identification catalogs.
  • Management of all research film.
  • Management of photo requests by various entities (press, magazines, websites).


Website Management
  • Website management for monkeymiadolphins.org and pcdolphinproject.org .
  • Updating website, maintaining social media accounts.
  • Responding to inquiries.


Lab Logistics
  • Lab personnel management.
  • Interviewing prospective students, training students, filling out time sheets.
  • Scheduling meetings and checking on undergraduate progress.


Other Duties
  • Independent research -fieldwork, writing, data analysis.
  • Conference presentations.
  • Manuscript publication.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Biology required.
  • Must know Excel, Word, WordPress and R Stat package.
  • Experience with data management, databases, statistical analyses and field research.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive experience with the Shark Bay Dolphin Research Project and databases
