Outreach Specialist, Virginia Department of Education Training and Technical Assistance Center

The Training and Technical Assistance Center (TTAC) at George Mason University is seeking applicants for the position of Outreach Specialist. This is a full-time professional faculty position starting Fall 2019. TTAC, located in the College of Education and Human Development's Helen A. Kellar Institute for Human disabilities, is supported by funding from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). TTAC provides technical assistance and professional development to school and related-services personnel who work with students with disabilities in Virginia Superintendent's Region 4. Specifically, the TTAC staff work to improve instructional practices of those who work with students with disabilities in an effort to increase the academic success of these students. Particular attention is given to those schools struggling to meet the state accreditation standards on indicators established by the VDOE and approved by the U.S. Department of Education.

Responsibilities: The purpose of this position is to provide support in the form of training and technical assistance to school personnel who work with students with disabilities in Virginia Superintendent's Region 4. The Outreach Specialist is responsible for coordination and delivery of specific training and professional development services as directed by VDOE or upon request of schools and school systems. These technical assistance activities provide support to school personnel in improving practices that facilitate improved outcomes for students with disabilities. The Outreach Specialist also supports VDOE and TTAC initiatives as directed.

Required Qualifications: Required qualifications for this position include a Master's degree in Special Education, General Education, or a related field; knowledge of effective best practices and current issues in special education; experience implementing and leading professional development activities; and experience directing others who provide professional development services to in-service teachers and administrators. Specifically, the qualified individual must have evidence of: * Experience working with teams of education professionals, particularly in coaching; * Implementation of research-based practices in curriculum, instruction, data-based decision making, assessment, and Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs); * Use of curriculum-driven support materials and technology-enhanced resources; * Experience with and knowledge of adaptations and modifications that enable students with disabilities to access the general education curriculum; * Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, to individuals and groups; and * Training in specialized reading instruction for students with disabilities who access the general curriculum.
