Assistant/Associate Professor in Cancer and Precision Medicine in the Urban Community Setting (Tenure-Track Cluster Hire)

The College of Science is pursuing a multidisciplinary effort to strengthen the Urban Science initiative, facilitated through the Department of Environmental Science and Policy (ESP), the Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science (GGS) and the School of Systems Biology (SSB). This new initiative will elevate the capabilities of these units and foster cross-unit collaboration. The key themes for the positions are Urban Informatics (GGS), Urban Ecology or Urban Wildlife Ecology (ESP), and Cancer and Precision Medicine in the Urban Community Setting (SSB). The proposed Urban Science cluster hires, together with already existing expertise in these Departments as well as the rest of the college, will establish a core transdisciplinary team that will allow us to continue innovation, establishing new academic offerings, and pursuing substantial research opportunities.

The cluster hire consists of three distinct positions in three different academic units. Assistant/Associate Professor in Cancer and Precision Medicine in the Urban Community Setting (Tenure-Track)

The School of Systems Biology (SSB), within the College of Science (COS), invites applications for a full-time, Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position in Cancer and Precision Medicine in the Urban Community Setting, beginning August 2018 or January 2019.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses and establish an externally funded independent research program in the area of translational medicine and precision medicine, particularly as applied to understanding mechanisms, developing diagnostics, treatments, and prevention of cancer in the urban community setting. It is expected that the successful candidate will synergistically contribute to the existing strengths of the school by collaborating with faculty members in SSB, the Center for Applied Proteomics and Molecular Medicine, and other departments. In particular, the successful candidate would be expected to collaborate with other faculty within the Urban Science initiative, which initially will include experts in Urban Informatics and Urban Ecology. Teaching requirements of the position will be consistent with COS and SSB policies and include graduate and/or undergraduate courses in cancer biology, cancer genomics, personalized and precision medicine.

Required Qualifications: * Successful completion of a PhD or MD or MD/PhD in a field relevant to cancer and precision medicine prior to the first day of the appointment; * Excellence in research in this field demonstrated by publication record in peer-reviewed journals; * Demonstrated expertise in molecular profiling and biomarker analysis; * Demonstrated potential to establish an independent research program; * Commitment to collaborate with other researchers within the Urban Science initiative; * Commitment and interest in teaching graduate and undergraduate-level courses; and * Strong commitment to mentoring and supervising graduate students. Preferred Qualifications: * Postdoctoral experience; * Proteomic technology expertise; * Experience in cancer precision medicine within the community/urban setting; * Record of seeking extramural research support evidenced by proposal submission and/or receipt of funding awards; and * Record of successful team work in a collaborative environment. About Us: The School of Systems Biology has 23 faculty members with the wide-ranging interests in molecular biology, systems biology, cancer proteomics, infectious disease, and bioinformatics. The school also has a diverse research funding portfolio provided by National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, other agencies, and private industry. Currently, SSB houses several graduate programs, including Ph.D. in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, Ph.D. in Biosciences, M.S. in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, M.S. in Biology and several graduate certificate programs. SSB faculty have close collaborations with the researchers from a number of local and regional institutions, including the NIH, Food and Drug Administration, United States Department of Agriculture Research Center, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Naval Research Laboratory, and Inova Health System among others.
