Responsibilities

  • Serve as Principal Researcher and Leader for one of the Research Groups of the Center for Statistical Research and Methodology (CSRM).
  • Coordinate the work of researchers for research projects.
  • Consult or collaborate with others on statistical modeling, statistical computing, experimentation, simulation, survey sampling design, probability sampling, time series, small area estimation, record linkage, or estimation problems.
  • Conduct research on statistical modeling, experimentation, simulation, time series, small area estimation, record linkage, survey sampling design, probability sampling, or estimation problems mostly improving or introducing new methodology.

Center for Statistical Research and Methodology (CSRM) conducts research on statistical design, modeling, and analysis methods for the Census Bureau's data collection, analysis, and dissemination programs, in collaboration with colleagues in the Research and Methodology Directorate, other Program Directorates, and outside researchers. Output of our efforts include new statistical methods and associated software. Researchers interact with academic, government, and other researchers to enhance CSRM statistical activities at the Census Bureau, through active participation in professional meetings, conferences, and symposia, through the preparation and dissemination of discussion papers, and through the publication in professional journals of the findings of research conducted or sponsored by CSRM (See www.census.gov/srd/csrm ).

This Job Announcement may be used to fill other Mathematical Statistician (Research) GS-1529-14; FPL: 14 positions within Census in the same geographical location with the same qualifications and specialized experience.

A probationary period may be required.

A supervisory probationary period may be required.

This position is ELIGIBLE for telework; additional criteria will be required (e.g., supervisory approval).

This is a NON-BARGAINING unit position.

Qualifications

Minimum Education Requirement:

Basic Requirements:

1. Degree: that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics.

OR

2. Combination of education and experience -- at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown in 1 above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

Specialized Experience:

For the GS-14, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-13 in the Federal service.

Experience for this position includes: Conducting theoretical mathematical statistics research with published results in peer reviewed journals in statistics, mathematics, or computer science; providing advice and consultation, planning, development, evaluation and execution of assignment which were of broad scope and marked complexity, significance and importance; applying a knowledge of Mathematical Statistical research being done by others in related fields; and consultation on a variety of problems involving the theory or application of Mathematical Statistical methods.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
