Summary

About the Position: This position is located in the Department of Surgical Nursing at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, one of the nation's largest military medical centers, serving Active Duty, war heroes, retirees, dependents and our Nation's leaders. The office is shared with another Nurse (Specialist/PICC). Hours of operation are Monday through Friday. Incumbent may need to be on call over the weekend.

Responsibilities

  • Assess patients to determine appropriateness of peripherally inserted central catheter placement (PICC).
  • Insert and maintain PICC in patients with poor vasculature and/or those needing long-term intravenous access.
  • Operate and monitor highly complex technical and specialized vascular access equipment.
  • Maintain sterile principle and techniques for PICC placement, interpreting to ensure compliance with established policies, procedures and standards of care and practice.
  • Assist other healthcare professionals with difficult and complex PICC cases, equipment and device malfunction.
  • Serve as hospital resource person for questions and issues related to intravenous access devices.
  • Instruct others on placement of PICC and vascular access device management.
  • Utilize ultrasound machine in conjunction with patient examinations as deemed necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • Two year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to complete a Childcare Background Check (CNACI) security investigation.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons.
  • This position requires you to satisfactorily complete a pre-employment physical examination.
  • This position is covered by the Department of Defense Civilian Employee Drug-Free Workplace Program as a testing designated position (TDP). You are required to pass urinalysis testing, as required prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
  • This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • PICC certification is preferred.
  • Pediatric PICC insertion preferred.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirements for Nurse (Specialist/PICC):

Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must submit a copy of your transcripts at the time of application)Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing School is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Experience: At least one or more full years of professional nursing experience which includes insertion and maintenance of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) in patients with poor vasculature or patients needing long-term intravenous access; maintaining PICC infection control sterile principles, procedures, standards of care, etc.; performing comprehensive professional nursing care assessments. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Education
