Summary

You will serve as a INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST in the INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE PROGRAM OFFICE of NBMC DAHLGREN.

Responsibilities

• You will perform industrial hygiene inspections, surveys, and evaluations individually or part of a team.
• You will evaluate workers that may be exposed to a wide range of physical, chemical, and biological hazards.
• You will evaluate and review industrial hygiene related aspects of research on new or rare chemicals for which toxicity data may not be available to use as guidelines.
• You will present oral briefings and provide detailed written reports of Industrial Hygiene survey findings including health hazards identified, exposure monitoring required and controls recommended.

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE for GS-09: In order to qualify for this position, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform successfully the duties of the position such as:

• Experience applying industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices carrying out all industrial hygiene programs.
• Experience analyzing and evaluating occupational health hazards to include those for which the nature and extent of hazards is not completely understood.
• Experience assisting in the devising of control measures for ventilation, shielding, material, substitution, and change in work procedures.
• Experience drafting industrial hygiene policy and guidance for occupational health and safety professionals.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE for GS-11: In order to qualify for this position, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform successfully the duties of the position such as:

• Experience applying industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices carrying out all industrial hygiene programs.
• Experience assisting with investigations of health problems which arise among workers to determine probable cause and recommend measures to minimize health hazards.
• Experience utilizing industrial hygiene sampling techniques and instrumentation.
• Experience planning and carrying out routine industrial hygiene inspections and surveys.

Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess:
The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

• A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
• A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
• Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (external link) (ABIH).

Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE for GS-09: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position: master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE for GS-11: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be combined to meet the total qualification requirements.
