Summary

The Research Services Directorate at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) is currently seeking interested applicants for the position of Engineering Technician (Aerospace) in the Research Systems Integration Branch (RSIB) (D105). This Technician position is a Research Systems Integration Specialist providing aircraft maintenance and maintenance planning to conduct research on NASA LaRC Aircraft.

Responsibilities

  • Provides technical knowledge/experience to conduct maintenance on-board NASA LaRC assigned aircraft. Plans and conducts maintenance across multiple platforms including developing work orders for scheduled/unscheduled maintenance activities.
  • Utilizes expert knowledge in a variety of aircraft systems to include: high-pressure air, , compressed gases, pneumatics, hydraulics, vacuum, electronic instrumentation and data acquisition, in support of fundamental
  • experimental research designed to enhance the knowledge and understanding of aerodynamics, aerothermodynamics, Earth sciences, flight safety and support Agency and industry-wide flight test experiments.
  • Performs testing, installation, repair, modification, and maintenance of aircraft and equipment for aerospace engineering projects. Specialized knowledge of aircraft hardware required for integration with aircraft test plans.
  • Provides technical leadership in problem investigations, troubleshooting, and issue resolution activities involving flight hardware, software, and associated ground support equipment and facilities.
  • Serves as project coordinator for special and/or advanced integration programs required to modify/update present aircraft and test systems capabilities through the integration of experimental equipment on aircraft.
  • Conceptualizes aircraft and system modifications, develops requirements, defines the scope of the initial design, reviews and makes inputs to the designs, and oversees the installation and acceptance phases of the program.
  • Provides critical judgments that affect the safety and reliability of aircraft and experimental hardware where failure could lead to serious consequences and submits recommendations related to system enhancements and aircraft productivity
  • Assists with test data interpretation and participates in problem/failure analysis of test program failure. Determines and evaluates alternative approaches in close collaboration with supervisors, project engineers, or other professionals.
  • Develops novel approaches to completing scheduled and unscheduled maintenance activities to minimize impact to research activities to include modification and development of aircraft scheduled maintenance programs.
  • Uses local electronic maintenance tracking tool to ensure maintenance properly performed and annotated. Reports daily to maintenance management. May be required to give presentations on upcoming maintenance planning.
  • Provides technical leadership in evaluating and recommending the adoption of new or enhanced maintenance approaches or practices for integration into the overall maintenance program.
  • Consults with the research staff on improved methods of technical accomplishment of research efforts, develops and implements technical innovations for unusual or unprecedented research test requirements, and writes detailed instructions.
  • Provides technical engineering advice and guidance with respect to aircraft maintenance and modification. Serves as an authoritative source of information and advice within the organization.
  • Consults with management and planning personnel in preparing requirements and criteria for complex or high value projects for modification of aircraft, aircraft systems, equipment, or hardware.
  • Teams with the Research Engineering Staff as test objectives are being developed and provides input during the planning phase of the project. Optimizes sequence of integration planning to improve efficiency and preserve consumables.
  • Provides technical advice to the performance of related assignments and is available to those employees for consultation on assigned projects in areas such as aerodynamics, aerothermodynamics, instrumentation, and advanced measurement systems
  • Using experience across a broad range of aircraft platforms, plans and performs maintenance on a variety of platforms, to include GIII, HU-25, B200, and single engine piston aircraft.
  • Plans and incorporates modifications and upgrades to experimental aircraft system components that allow expansion of capabilities and development of new technologies.
  • May be required to fly as a non-crew member on-board the assigned aircraft during functional check flight and research flights or to act as a member of the flight crew as needed.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: Applicants must possess the following Selective Placement Factor to be considered minimally qualified for this position: The applicant must have an FAA airframe and power plant certification. Those without this experience specified in their resume will be found not qualified for this position.

Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS09), which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Examples of specialized experience include experience with aerospace hardware, aircraft flight and flight operations, aircraft hardware and test technologies, and complex aircraft systems, to include aerodynamics, aerothermodynamics and their interaction.

As a condition of employment, the incumbent must have the ability to obtain and maintain an FAA equivalent Class III medical certificate.

Position will be filled at the GS-11 level. The full performance level for this position is GS-12. Employee may be non-competitively promoted to the next grade when qualified and recommended by management.
