Responsibilities

The incumbent of this position has three primary responsibilities, the design and conduct of research to evaluate all aspects of the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), serving as a source of knowledge for other BOP researchers and BOP staff in the following areas of sociology, criminology, criminal justice, corrections, evaluation research and research methods and to maintain familiarity with current research finding in the social sciences relevant to BOP goals and interests, bringing this to bare on the research conducted and reports written.

The incumbent formulates research that answers questions of interest to the Federal Bureau of Prisons Administration. Topics for research proposals may originate with the incumbent or the administration. However, it is the researcher's responsibility to clearly stat the problem and to conduct a research inquiry that unambiguously addresses the questions of interest. Research findings are shared, by way of concise research reports, with administrative and supervisory personnel within the Bureau of Prisons, with interested parties in other Federal agencies, and with the larger social and behavioral science community.
