Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to operate gasoline or diesel powered engineering and construction heavy equipment, and provide day-to-day maintenance, repair and construction of roadways and trails within the park. The position is located in the Branch of Roads and Trails, Division of Facility Management.

Responsibilities

  • Operate gasoline or diesel powered engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler type traction, such as road graders, tractors with bulldozer or angle dozer blades, front-end loaders, excavators, backhoes, wheel loaders, trench diggers, and large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments.
  • Operate equipment to excavate, backfill, grade or level earth to rough specifications on such projects as breaking new ground for trails, roads, canals, tunnels or construction sites.
  • Work is completed to exact specifications on flat or rolling terrain, requiring more "touch" than at lower grade levels. At this level, earth is moved on mountainous and steep slopes, grade curves and shoulders, rocky or soft ground, hilly forests, and other surfaces with similar rough terrain/features.
  • Operate a variety of industrial type wheel or track loaders (e.g., Caterpillar 988 size) and backhoes (e.g., Case 580 size or equivalent) with half cubic yard to 6 cubic yard buckets. Equipment is used to load soil, rock, gravel or trash from stockpiles or pits.
  • Connect snow removal equipment and clear roads and trails of snow and ice.
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance to assigned equipment and perform limited field repairs, generally without direct supervision. May be called upon to assist mechanics in accomplishing all types of mechanical repairs to equipment.
  • Interpret blueprints and work instructions in order to cut desired grade on roads, trails, grounds, and to cut metal used in welding to a desired length.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You must possess and maintain a current Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tractor Trailer, Tanker and Air Brakes Endorsements.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

    Physical Demands: Incumbent frequently lifts, carries and moves items of various sizes and shapes weighing over 60 pounds and is on feet a lot of the time, frequently standing, walking, climbing, bending and stooping.

    Working Conditions: Incumbent primarily works outside, temperature ranging from 0 degrees in winter to 100 degrees in summer, in all kinds of weather conditions (day or night) and is subject to loud noises, gasoline fumes, dust, ease, tar, and soiling of clothing and skin surfaces from heavy equipment, air tools and materials used. Measurable time is spent working with hot mixed asphalt materials which have temperatures in excess of 300 degrees, making an extremely uncomfortable working environment during the hot summer months. Incumbent is subject to cuts, bruises and broken bones in performance of duties as work areas are frequently crowded with pedestrians, bicyclists, parked automobile and at time near moving vehicles.
