An Overview
A Laborer II participates in the pick-up and disposal of leaves, driftwood and other debris from City parks, curbs and gutters, right-of-ways, sidewalks, catch basin inlets, dog exercise areas, and streams. May operate one or more types of automotive equipment and performs a variety of manual tasks in connection with such operations. Employees in this class are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all types of landscaping and automotive equipment. Laborer II's assist with removing snow and ice from City streets, sidewalks, school properties, trails, marina slips, decking and applying sand and/or salt as needed. This position participates in safety practices that ensure the safety of employees, pedestrians, residential homes and property, and passing vehicles through the exercise of safe work practices. Follows and applies written and oral instructions that are outlined in detail by a supervisor, standard procedures are followed, and work is inspected periodically for safety and economy of operation.

What You Should Bring
Your knowledge and experience related to landscape management or similarly related trades experience will be utilized daily. Your ability to perform duties citywide in both outdoor and indoor settings to include extreme cold, heat, hazards and atmospheric conditions. You will also be able to complete medium to heavy work requiring the exertion of fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally, up to twenty (20) pounds of force frequently, and up to ten (10) pounds of force constantly to move, lift and push objects. Your ability to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, stand, walk, push and pull will be instrumental in your daily work. You should possess a valid state issued driver's license.

The Opportunity
  • Participates in the pick-up and disposal of leaves, driftwood and other debris from City parks, curbs and gutters, right-of-ways, sidewalks, catch basin inlets, dog exercise areas, stream beds, culverts, drainage ditches and along the riverfront;
  • Assist with a crew removing snow and ice from City streets, sidewalks, school properties, trails, marina slips, decking and applying sand and/or salt as needed;
  • Assures the safety of employees, pedestrians, residential homes and property, and passing vehicles through the exercise of safe work practices;
  • Follows and applies written and oral instructions;
  • Participates in the promotion and enforcement of staff in the area of safety, grounds maintenance and equipment operation. May operate equipment in the absence of Equipment Operators;
  • Conducts systematic inspections of parks, ball fields and other City properties maintained by the Department;
  • Provides factual data and information for use in preparing operating budgets, and monitors expenditures as budgets are executed;

The mission of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities is to enrich the City of Alexandria by creating meaningful experiences through public space, cultural activities, and programming. The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities received national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). National accreditation requires park and recreation agencies to meet 155 standards representing elements of effective and efficient park and recreation operations.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Completion of high school or vocational school courses; ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of weather; some knowledge of construction or maintenance activities and the equipment and tools of the trade; and one year experience in any trade; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

Three years' experience in the operation of landscape maintenance and/or construction equipment; the ability to understand safety hazards and to ensure safety practices are followed; ability to submit daily work documentation and reports.
