Job Description:

The Coordinator will lead SRTS sustainability efforts, including the following:
  • Build upon strong City, Schools and Community support for the program through meetings with parent and civic groups, articles and press, and reports to City and School Division leaders highlighting SRTS progress and benefits.
  • Help establish SRTS Teams at each school. Nurture and mentor SRTS champions, and develop "succession plans" for both parent and Administrator/teacher champions to ensure continuation of SRTS programs at each school.
  • Lead efforts to develop ACPS' Activities and Programs Plan (APP) for the 2020-21 school year
  • Work with ACPS' Health and Physical Education Instructional Specialist, with community partners, and with PTA Presidents and Treasurers, to ensure sustained SRTS funding.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education required.

Experience:
  • Candidate should have experience and/or training in developing, leading, implementing, and evaluating school-age programs
  • Experience working with K-12 students of diverse backgrounds
  • Candidates with equivalent experience and/or training which ensure the ability to perform the essential job functions will be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Working knowledge or experience of the Safe Routes to School program (previous grant applicant, organized a walk/bike to school event)
    Experience teaching bicycle and pedestrian safety curriculum, or experience presenting on benefits of walking, biking, or increased physical activity
  • Experience working with likely stakeholders such as public health agencies, local law enforcement, local county/city/town government, PTA
  • Experience leading event coordination
  • Experience maintaining a contact list
  • Communications experience, such as organizing a newsletter, using social media, working with the media and press, etc.

  • Skill in event planning.
  • Experience maintaining a database, and providing progress reports
  • Experience working with students, families, and staff from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Skill in problem solving to select, organize and logically process relevant information (verbal, numerical or abstract) to solve a problem.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English.
  • Skill in written communication to understand written information (including instructions, descriptions and ideas), and to express such information in writing so that others will understand and, at times, be convinced or persuaded.
  • Skill in oral communication to understand verbal information (including instructions, descriptions and ideas), and to express such information verbally so that others will understand and, at times, be convinced or persuaded.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact with contacts in a customer service-oriented manner by establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and working in harmony with supervisors, staff, students, other organizations and the general
  • Skill in using a computer and office suite software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) .
  • Ability and willingness to work a variable schedule.
  • Manage overall SRTS implementation, including budget tracking and management, and interacting with VDOT's SRTS staff;
  • Direct and assist with implementation of ACPS' 2019-20 SRTS Activities and Program Plan (APP), such as
    • Monitor delivery of pedestrian and bicycle education by Physical Education teachers; recommend improvements, if warranted, based on observations at each school and in conjunction with the Bicycling in the Schools (BITS) team;
    • Work with SRTS champions at each school on implementation plans for their strategies, such as Walking School Buses, Bike Trains, Walk and Bike to School days/events, and Bike Rodeos.
