Position Information

Arlington County is currently recruiting for several opportunities for temporary seasonal employment with the Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation. We are currently seeking instructors and/or coaching staff in our popular and growing aquatics programs.

Our successful, well-established program offers programs starting from parent and tot classes through preschool and level classes based on the American Red Cross program. Specialty programs include diving, water aerobics, adapted, and beginner, intermediate and advanced adult classes. Arlington Aquatics also offers a competitive swim team (Arlington Aquatic Club) which is an affiliated USA Swimming program for developmental, conditioning and competitive swimmers. Prior aquatics experience is a plus. Arlington Aquatics will help train the right candidates and certify them as necessary.

Specific duties include:
  • Providing tailored Aquatics instruction to student's needs while evaluating student performance;
  • Preparing for class instruction, lesson plans and curriculum;
  • Setting up equipment prior to class and securing equipment after class;
  • Inspecting equipment and reporting unsafe equipment to supervisor;
  • Recommending purchase of supplies and equipment; and
  • Completing required class paperwork, such as attendance reports.
Currently our program is looking for people experienced in any of the following areas:
  • Swimming instructors for all ages and skill levels
  • Diving instructors
  • Developmental and conditioning swim team coaches
  • Competitive swim team coaches
  • Adapted Aquatics (participants with disabilities)
Applications are being accepted for the following positions:

Recreation Instructor I: starts at $17.69 per hour
This position is typically assigned to beginner-level classes, or classes where less technical expertise is required to effectively instruct class participants.
Recreation Instructor II: starts at $20.98 per hour
This position is typically assigned intermediate, or single-level classes. Concepts taught throughout the course are moderately complex.
Recreation Instructor III: starts at $24.25 per hour
This position is typically assigned advanced-level classes. Concepts taught throughout the course are complex. This position may also be assigned to teach therapeutic recreation courses or sections specifically designed for participants with disabilities. Subject matter taught may necessitate additional safety considerations by the instructor. Recreation Instructor III positions are expected to have the knowledge and ability to serve as a substitute instructor for many other classes within the general area of expertise.

Selection Criteria

Minimum:
Recreation Instructor I: High school diploma or GED plus 400 hours of technical experience in Aquatics.

Recreation Instructor II: High school diploma or GED plus 800 hours of technical experience in Aquatics, of which at least 50 hours must be as an instructor.

Recreation Instructor III: High school diploma or GED plus 1200 hours of technical experience in Aquatics, of which at least 50 hours must be as an instructor.

Substitution: Additional education may be substituted for experience requirement, with each year of post-high school education substituting for 400 hours of technical experience. However, additional education may not be substituted for the instructing hours' requirement.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with the following:
  • Previous involvement in a competitive or recreational aquatics program.
  • Current or previous aquatics instruction through coaching or teaching.
  • Experience working with children of all ages.


Additional Information

Programs are located at the Arlington County High School Pools: Wakefield High School located at 1325 S. Dinwiddie St., Washington-Lee High School located at 1301 N. Stafford St., and Yorktown High School located at 5200 Yorktown Blvd.

All shifts are weekday afternoon, evening and weekends (both Saturday and Sunday)

Starting salaries listed above are effective July 1, 2019.

Permanent, Full-Time Appointments
All jobs are permanent, full-time appointments unless otherwise stated in the announcement. The following benefits are available:

Paid Leave : Vacation leave is earned at the rate of four hours biweekly. Leave accrual increases every three years until eight hours of leave are earned biweekly for twelve or more years of service. Sick leave is earned at the rate of four hours biweekly. There are eleven paid holidays each year.

Health and Dental Insurance : Three group health insurance plans are offered - a network open access plan, a point-of-service plan, and a health maintenance organization. A group dental insurance plan is also offered. The County pays a significant portion of the premium for these plans for employees and their dependents. A discount vision plan is provided for eye care needs.

Life Insurance : A group term policy of basic life insurance is provided at no cost to employees. The benefit is one times annual salary. Additional life insurance is available with rates based on the employee's age and smoker/non-smoker status.

Retirement : The County offers three vehicles to help you prepare for retirement: a defined benefit plan, a defined contribution plan (401(a)), and a deferred compensation plan (457). The defined benefit plan provides a monthly retirement benefit based on your final average salary and years of service with the County. You contribute a portion of your salary on a pre-tax basis to this plan. General employees contribute 4% of pay; uniformed public safety employees contribute 7.5% of pay. Employees become vested in the plan at five years of service. The County also contributes to this plan.

For general employees, the County also contributes 4.2% of pay to a defined contribution plan (401(a)) . The County also matches your 457 contribution, up to $20 per pay period, in this plan. The 457 deferred compensation plan allows you to set aside money on either a pre-tax (457b) or post-tax (457 Roth) basis up to the IRS annual limit. New employees are automatically enrolled with a pre-tax contribution equal to 2% of your base pay.

Other Benefits: The County also offers health, dependent care, and parking flexible spending accounts; long-term care insurance; tuition assistance; transit and walk/bike to work subsidies; a college savings plan; wellness programs; training opportunities; and a variety of other employee benefits.

Permanent, Part-Time Appointments:
Part time employees who work ten or more hours per week receive paid leave and benefits in proportion to the number of hours worked per week.

Limited Term Appointments:
Benefits are the same as permanent appointments except that the employees do not achieve permanent status.

Temporary Regular Appointments:
Temporary regular employees who work 30 hours or more per week are eligible for health, dental, and basic life insurance as described above. They are also eligible for vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays.

Temporary Seasonal and Occasional Appointments:
Temporary employees who work on a seasonal basis or variable hours receive sick leave, but do not normally receive other paid leave or benefits. Exceptions are noted in individual announcements.
