The Kennedy Center is the nation's busiest performing arts center, hosting approximately 2,000 performances each year for audiences numbering more than 2 million. The Washington National Opera (WNO), founded in 1956, is one of the leading opera companies in the United States and has been an artistic affiliate of the Kennedy Center since 2011. We are seeking a Stitcher to join our team!

The Stitcher will construct, fit, alter, and refurbish costumes for all WNO productions, galas, concerts, and events. Contribute to the efficient and professional execution of work performed in the Costume Workroom.

Duties and Responsibilities:

75% Production
  • Measure costumes for all rented and remounted productions as assigned.
  • Pre-alter and refurbish costumes prior to fittings as assigned.
  • Construct and alter costumes as instructed by the Draper and First Hand.
  • Complete notes from all costume fittings and dress rehearsals.
  • Maintain WNO quality standards.
  • Ensure that all work is completed accurately and on schedule.
  • Assist in the completion of post-production work on all costumes.
  • Assist the Draper or First Hand in costume fittings as needed.
  • Assist the Draper or First Hand at dress rehearsals as needed.

10% Costume Studio Facility
  • Contribute to a safe and comfortable working environment.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace.
  • Ensure that equipment and supplies are properly maintained.
  • Keep informed about industry standards and new products.

15% Other
  • Assist in the completion of costume stock projects as requested.
  • Assist with the organization and storage of all fabrics, trims, and supplies.
  • Set up and monitor volunteer projects as required.
  • Provide costume support for other company departments as necessary.
  • Other department needs as assigned by the Costume Director.

N/A Responds to the needs and requests of Kennedy Center management and staff in a professional and expedient manner, adheres to all employer policies and procedures, and other duties as assigned.

Key Qualifications:
  • You have a High School Diploma, or equivalent with professional training in clothing construction.
  • You have experience with the construction and tailoring of men's and women's clothing.
  • You are highly motivated and a self-starter.
  • You have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • You have a working knowledge of costume history.
  • You have a working knowledge of various costume construction skills, including sewing, cutting, and tailoring.
  • You are proficient in the operation of all costume workroom equipment.
  • You have basic knowledge of workroom equipment maintenance.


Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate in person and on the telephone. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel in order to operate computer keyboard, office equipment, and other essential tasks. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, crouch, and reach with hands and arms. This position infrequently lifts, carries, or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is low.

Travel up to 5% may be required.
