Assistant/Associate Professor of Instrumental Music/ Director of the University Bands

Responsibilities: Teaching responsibilities will include applied courses in the incumbent's area of expertise and related coursework, including methods courses as needed for the preparation of those seeking certification in Music Education; serves as coordinator of instrumental music within the B.A. Fine Arts/Music concentration, which entails participation in academic and co-curricular program development and curriculum development; recruitment for the instrumentalist in the academic music program; and recruitment of students who will participate in the University Bands as part of their extracurricular activity; manages and directs the University Bands, with specific creative direction of the Marching and Concert Band; ensures our students are knowledgeable and adhere to Bowie State University Students Code of Conduct (a set of high standards of behavior for our student's personal conduct which promotes the moral and ethical development of our students) which is inclusive of the University policy on hazing; supervises Assistant Director and Graduate intern, in their direction of the Pep Band, Jazz Ensemble and development of an Orchestral Ensemble; the incumbent is expected to be active in service to the Department, the College of Arts and Sciences, and to the University; will provide overall leadership of the band staff, and their responsibilities including band arranging, field show design, program development, scholarship program and fundraising; and during football season, the incumbent will coordinate band activities with the appropriate functions in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts and the Athletic Department. This is a full-time tenure track faculty position to start July 2019.

 

Qualifications: A terminal degree in Music with a focus on band management or conducting is preferred. A minimum of a Master's of Music is required. Directing and managing band at the college level; preferred experience with fundraising, recruitment, and the ability to collaborate with others in the ongoing development of the music curriculum. The incumbent must be a team player and work collaboratively with students, music faculty, department faculty, and personnel from other departments across the campus. Should have the capacity and expertise to prioritize tasks and exercise good judgment in music choices for a variety of occasions, in which music is expected to be provided within the department and across the campus.
