Summary

The position serves within Technology Solutions Operations (TTS-OPS), within the Office of the Treasurer (T), of the National Gallery of Art. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining a close working relationship with the technology vendors, the Gallery's system owners, Information System Security Officer (ISSO) and other key stakeholders to ensure applications and services meet the system security requirements and are in compliance with the evolving US Government regulations.

Responsibilities

The incumbent:
  • Evaluate systems and upgrades for appropriateness.
  • Oversee and implement system upgrade strategies.
  • Assist in the design, implementation, and maintenance of complex solutions.
  • Coordinate activities with other technical personnel as appropriate.
  • Develop and analyze highly complex system standards, thresholds, and recommendations to maximize system performance.
  • Maintain all server-side Security Certificates to ensure compliance with the Gallery's cyber security policy.
  • Monitor and ensure timely renewal of maintenance agreements for software, hardware and security certificates
  • Develop strategies to manage the frequency of installations of the support package releases and patch.
  • Monitor industry trends for supported infrastructure and makes recommendations for enhancements and/or technology infusion to ensure managed infrastructure stays aligned with technological advances and industry trends.
  • Implement new approved technologies
  • Research current systems technologies and serve as subject matter expert on complex systems processes and procedures.
  • Provide technical know-how to internal and external personnel on highly complex system administration and installation processes.
  • Share knowledge and provide guidance to less experienced personnel.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders to formulate complex technical solutions. Inform stakeholders of appropriate developments in technical support products.
  • Responsible for installing and maintaining the Red Hat Linux server operating system and various Linux applications and services such as Apache, Tomcat, Kerberos, LDAP, MySQL, Satellite Server, Postfix, Bash, Python, and Perl scripting.
  • Develop and implement disaster recovery plans.
  • Manage vendor accounts and serve as COR
  • Develop and maintain technical and procedural documentation
  • Coordinated Disaster Recovery exercises
  • Oversee activities for the security posture and implementing patches of Linux assets during weekly maintenance windows (off-hours).
  • Provide immediate response to break-fix of Linux assets base on the Gallery's Business Continuity tiered handling requirements (to include off-hours).
  • Provide remote and/or onsite support in case of after-hour emergencies or for performing infrastructure work outside non-business hours.

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have a minimum of one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility comparable to the next lower grade or comparable pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector. Examples of specialized experience are:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 grade level or comparable pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector serving as a technical advisor to various strategic IT initiatives within a cultural institution.

Those applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be evaluated against these factors to determine the best-qualified candidates.
  • At least 8 years of expert-level hands-on experience with system administration and management of 100+ servers running Linux operating system supporting mission critical 24x7 production environment.
  • At least 8 years Expert-level hands-on experience with Linux Shell and Perl Scripting
  • Hands-on experience with Windows Server Operating System administration
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience with building, security hardening, patching, backups/recovery and troubleshooting of Linux operating system in both virtual and physical server environments.
  • Experience with Commercial off the Shelf (COTS) and/or Open-Source automation tools for improving management of complex Linux-based environments
  • Working knowledge of Apache, Tomcat and Java Development Kit (JDK) in Linux-based environments. Experience with these products in Windows environment will be a plus.
  • Experience with supporting MySQL database in production environments. Experience with Microsoft SQL Administration will be a plus.
  • Experience with Linux-based environment integration with Active Directory for user access control
  • At least 3 years of Working knowledge of supporting server deployment and management in Amazon Web Services (AWS) and/or Azure cloud-based infrastructure as a service (IaaS) environments
  • Thorough understanding and workings of Server protocols including, NTP, SMTP, SFTP, and email routing.
  • Thorough understanding and workings of incident handling protocols, personally identifiable information, Server network procedures, and information handling.
  • Possesses project and process management skills, with the ability to handle multiple concurrent projects and a wide range of tasks.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure, manage multiple tasks simultaneously and within time constraints.

    Education: All academic degrees and coursework must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.

    Candidate has a bachelor's degree (master's degree preferred) in information technology, computer science, system engineering, or equivalent degree.

    Certification or Trainings: Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) and Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) in version 6 or later are preferred.

    Specialized Amazon Web Services training - Architecting on AWS, is a plus.
