Summary

You will serve as an Aircraft Trades Apprentice in a training position under close supervision and technical guidance. The positions are located in the Production Trades Branch of the Aircraft Department, Fleet Readiness Center (FRC) Mid-Atlantic (FRC Southeast Detachment, Oceana) at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia.

Responsibilities

  • You will gradually gain trade knowledge and proficiency requiring increasing knowledge and more progressively technical assignments.
  • Sheet Metal Mechanic (3806): Cut and remove damaged areas of aircraft, parts and assemblies, fabricate and install patches to repair aircraft parts and components.
  • Aircraft Mechanic (8852): Disassemble and assemble aircraft equipment, install, test, modify, overhaul, and repair assemblies and sub-assemblies.

  • Must be willing to sign a Continued Service Agreement to work within the Department of Navy a period equal to a minimum of three times the length of training.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Selectee is required to sign an Authorization Agreement, and Certification of Training Form, SF182 with Continued Service Agreement fields 15 and 16 filled in and page four signed. Failure to comply with this agreement will result in the apprentice reimbursing FRCMA for all tuition, books, tools, and fees.

These positions are covered by a formal training plan. FRC Mid-Atlantic Apprentice Program includes academic, trade training, and paid work experience. The selectees will perform a variety of duties associated with the specific trade for which hired. Continued employment and advancement requires satisfactory completion of classroom training and work experience. College level classroom training may include, but will not be limited to, trade skills and trade related mathematics (e.g. algebra, geometry, trigonometry), introductory sciences (e.g. metallurgy, electrical theory), and trade drawings and blueprints. You may be promoted after meeting all requirements, and upon the recommendation of management. After selectees successfully complete the training program, they will be converted to the full performance level of WG-10.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
