You will serve as a Epidemiologist in the Population Health Directorate of NAVMCPUBHLTHCEN.

GS-11: $62,365 - $81,080 PER ANNUM
GS-12: $74,750 - $97,179 PER ANNUM

Responsibilities

  • You will Serves as a staff epidemiologist specializing in one or more specific areas of public health to include: health analytics, health surveillance, disease surveillance, biosurveillance, behavioral health, mental health and other areas.
  • You will conduct continuous surveillance of available medical or related informational databases.
  • You will define problems that will be studied, and conducts extensive background research of scientific and technical publications and literature on the topic .
  • You will review existing background data reported to military medical and surveillance systems and documents relevant data available from the civilian scientific community
  • You will document trends, rates, and relative impacts of disease and adverse health outcomes among populations studied and prepares results of findings.

  • Work requires periods of walking, standing and bending in offices, laboratoies, hospitals, treatment facilities and other work areas.
  • Work requires frequently carrying light items such as books, and instruments.
  • Incumbent may be required to travel on national and internatinal travel conveyances to conduct outbreak investigations, attend conferences, meetings, training or visit installations and health care agencies (2-3 weeks per year).
  • Incumbent may be exposed to physical and mental hazards while conducting field surveys or outbreak investigations.
  • Employees who have direct contact with patients will receive appropriate imunization against communicable diseases unless a current immunization, a protective titer or medical exemption is documented.


Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, you must possess the following specialized experience:

Minimum Qualifications for GS-12: In order to qualify for this position, your resume must demonstrate at least one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector in a medical care setting. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform successfully the duties of the position such as:

- Plans and executes short and long-range epidemiological studies, assessments, projects and/or health, disease and injury investigations or analysis for identifying risk factors for specialized assigned area.
- Develops preventive measures to reduce morbidity and mortality in assigned area in military beneficiary populations.
- Conducts outcome analysis to evaluate interventions of preventive measures to determine their efficacy.
- Analyzes and interprets statistically findings from population based information systems or computerized databases generated and used to obtain significant results or major problem areas to attention of the supervisor.
- Assists in the provision of advising and providing consultative assistance to department heads and others on epidemiologic problems and advises and develops recommendations in assigned area of expertise.

Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE for GS-11: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be combined to meet the total qualification requirements.
