Summary

You will serve as a Nurse (ONCOLOGY) in the Medical Services Directorate, Hematology/Oncology Department of NAVMEDCEN PORTSMOUTH VA.

This announcement uses the OPM Federal Wide direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.

Responsibilities

  • You will participate in coordination of the plan of care with the multidisciplinary team, promoting timely follow-up on treatment and supportive care recommendations.
  • You will assist in the identification of candidates for genetic counseling and facilitate appropriate referrals.
  • You will assist patients with cancer issues related to treatment goals, advance directives and end-f-life concerns.
  • You will document patient's progress in the Hematology/Oncology Team Secondary medical record, and other appropriate databases.
  • You will initiate coordination efforts to ensure smooth transition and continued healthcare treatment to patients when military member/family member transfers out of the area.

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or pass the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • Must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification or eligibility with 12 months of hire preferred.
  • You will be offered the hepatitis B vaccine (HBV) or HBV immunity testing. Declination of this vaccine will require a signed Hepatitis B Immunization Declination form prior to reporting to work.
  • You will be required to receive and maintain appropriate vaccination against seasonal influenza on an annual basis.
  • Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).


Qualifications

Education
A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (external link) , Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (external link) , Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (external link) , or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (external link) is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
Licensure
For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination (external link) . In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
  • Experience identifying barriers to care such as childcare, elder care, housing, culture, psychosocial, employment, insurance, etc.
  • Experience facilitating the scheduling of appointments, diagnostic testing and procedures to expedite the plan of care
  • Experience facilitating individualized care within the context of functional status, cultural consideration, psychosocial, and spiritual needs for patients and their families
  • Experience acting as a advocate for patients to promote optimal care and outcomes
  • Experience provide psychological support to patients, families, and caregivers during periods of high emotional stress and anxiety;
  • Experience providing guidance, education and appropriate referrals to assist patients in coping with the diagnosis of cancer and it's potential outcome
  • Experience obtaining and developing oncology-related education materials for patients, staff and community members
  • Experience developing or using appropriate assessment tools such as distress thermometer, fatigue scale, performance status to promote consistent, holistic plan of care.

Education

In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
  • Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field; or
  • At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program.
