The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is the science operations center for several NASA missions, including the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the most famous space observatory in history. We also lead the science and mission operations for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), planned to launch in 2021. Our Project Reference Database Branch is seeking a Software Engineer to join the team that builds databases for the JWST flight and ground systems. STScI is located on the Johns Hopkins University Campus in Baltimore, MD. Your role and responsibilities: A Software Engineer in this role is part of the JWST Project Reference Database (PRD) team and is responsible for building the PRDs that will be used in flight operations and in the ground system at STScI. The PRD team implements change requests to the files in the PRD and supports the review and approval process. We interface and collaborate with internal and external partners like STScI's Flight Operations team, NASA, and other mission contractors. You will validate data received, and use custom software for building products and conducting configuration control of the data You will become knowledgeable about our operations activities and support the review process You will become knowledgeable about spacecraft operations and ground system operations You will build and maintain XML schema and XSL for data verification You will contribute to our software maintenance for existing programs: coding, testing, debugging and documenting programs Your Qualifications and Job Requirements: You are typically eager to learn and grow in your career, demonstrate great versatility and teamwork. You are a creative problem-solver with strong analytical, verbal and written communication skills with a team player mentality. Your schedule is flexible, making you available to support some off-hours and weekend rehearsals, when necessary, and during commissioning of the observatory after launch. We are looking for applicants with experience with the following: Building XML schema and XSL Working knowledge of Java or Python or other programming languages Working knowledge of SQL, HTML, Microsoft Access and Excel Using Configuration Management systems, version control, problem ticket reporting and processes Analytical troubleshooting, problem solving, and writing and maintaining documentation You should have a Bachelor of Science degree or higher degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Astronomy, Physics, or a related technical or scientific field. Substitution of additional relevant education or experience for the stated qualifications may be considered. The starting salary is commensurate to your education and experience.
