Summary

This position is located in the Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR), Smithsonian Facilities (SF), Smithsonian Institution. The incumbent serves under the general supervision of the Crafts Shop Supervisor and performs a variety of duties in the zone. The incumbent may be required to work late shifts, weekends and holidays and is subject to being called in for emergencies to restore the Smithsonian Institution to normal operations.

• Installs, modifies and repairs new and existing high pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam heating, steam generation and hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks.
• Installs, maintains, modifies, repairs and tests conventional piping systems, such as high pressure steam (up to 100 pounds), air, gas, refrigerant, hot and cold lines, and sewer system.
• Works with building plans, blueprints, sketches and specifications to plan and layout the routine placement and proper operation of systems and equipment.
• Prepares and assembles for installation by cutting, threading and bending pipe.
• Repairs leaks and clears obstructions in pipes and waste lines, storm drains fixtures and traps by using electric and flexible hand held augers, suction cups, and compressed air guns.

Physical Requirements:

Pipefitters make repairs and installation from ladders, scaffolding and platforms, and where the work is in hard-to-reach places. They are required to stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring positions. They frequently lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift more than 50 pounds. This employee's work requires prolonged standing, climbing up and down ladders and scaffolding, and working in cramped positions.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applications will first be evaluated to determine whether the following screen out element is met:

Ability to do the work of the Pipefitter without more than normal supervision.

If an applicant meets the screen-out element, the following Job Elements will be evaluated:

• Knowledge of Equipment, assembly, installation, repair, etc.
• Knowledge of technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
• Ability to interpreting instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading).
• Ability to use measuring instruments and layouts materials/instruments associated with plumbing work.
• Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment used to perform minor repairs and maintenance.
• Ability to manage trouble shooting.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of two category groups based on job-related criteria:

Best Qualified Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.

Qualified - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-veterans within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no veteran in that category is passed over to select a non-veteran in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied.
