Summary

This position is located in the Armed Forces Retirement Home, Healthcare Services, Nursing Division in Washington, DC. The Director of Nursing (DoN) is ultimately responsible for all activities that occur within the Nursing Division. The DoN manages and directs licensed and unlicensed nursing care staff members and their provision of quality nursing care in the delivery of patient care.

Responsibilities

As a GS-13 Supervisory Nurse, you will:
  • Assume administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability for supervision of the Nursing Division for compliance with Federal, state, local and AFRH guidelines. Periodically review, update, formulate and promulgate the philosophy and objectives of the Nursing Division and ensure that they are understood and practiced by the employees.
  • Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and direct the Nursing Division, as well as its programs and activities, in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern long term care facility operations.
  • Develop, maintain, and periodically update written policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day functions of the nursing division.
  • Establish and maintain procedures that ensure that the nursing personnel, agency staff, and private duty personnel have valid licenses and credentials.
  • Participate in on-going quality assurances/risk management programs for the Nursing Division.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

In addition to the education requirement, you must also meet Specialized Experience and Licensure requirement.

Specialized experience: For the GS-13 grade level, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:

Supervision of nursing unit personnel and supervisors, Staff development, experience analyzing policies/procedures, communicating with staff on key issues, and explaining assignments and responsibilities to a nursing staff.

Licensure:

RN- For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

SPECIAL NOTE: Long-term care experience and/or interacting with geriatric patients is highly desired.

Education

A graduate or higher level degree, bachelors degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- A one year probationary period may be required.
- A one year supervisory probationary period may be required.

- Wear required safety clothing and/or equipment required by the position. This may include gloves, masks, etc.
- Shift Work: This facility operates on a 24 hour per day, three-shift basis. Assignment to a specific shift cannot be guaranteed. The successful applicant must be available to work on all three shifts on a rotational basis.
- Because the AFRH's mission requires uninterrupted, direct human support and medical care for its Residents, this position is considered essential for continuing AFRH operations. Therefore, the incumbent is expected to arrive for duty on time, as scheduled, and to complete the assigned tour during emergency situations such as hazardous weather.
