The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) seeks an energetic, intelligent, and organized colleague who is interested in developing and managing important CIC projects in a fast-paced and team-oriented environment. This individual would serve in the full-time role of Projects Manager. Responsibilities include special projects in the Office of the President and activities of CIC’s Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE) initiative. CIC is the major national service organization for all small and mid-sized independent liberal arts colleges and universities in the U.S. Currently, 684 colleges and universities and 82 organizations are members, and growth has occurred consistently over several decades. CIC’s 26-person staff, based in Washington, DC, serves its member institutions through conferences, externally funded projects and programs, research and advocacy, and other activities designed to assist institutions in improving leadership expertise, educational programs, administrative and financial performance, and institutional visibility.

Responsibilities and Requirements

The Projects Manager is a new staff position that will have responsibilities in two areas of CIC’s work. Reporting to and working closely with the Assistant to the President and Liaison to the Board of Directors, the position will provide administrative support to the President’s Office, including managing the president’s schedule, travel, and correspondence; and assisting with preparations for meetings of the CIC Board of Directors. These responsibilities require absolute confidentiality, precision, excellent judgment, speedy task execution, broad understanding of CIC’s activities and goals, and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President and working closely with the Director of NetVUE and other campus-based NetVUE staff, the position also will provide operational and administrative support for communications, correspondence, and publications as well as grant administration and arrangement of meetings and events. NetVUE is a nationwide consortium of more than 250 independent colleges and universities to foster vocational exploration among undergraduate students. CIC administers all NetVUE activities, including a biennial national conference, regional gatherings in the alternate years, and several grant programs to support programming at NetVUE member institutions. These responsibilities require effective written and oral communication, attention to detail and precision, confidentiality, handling of sensitive application materials, strong interpersonal skills, and good judgment.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree (preferably from a NetVUE or CIC member college or university) and some work experience (preferably in higher education or for a membership organization) are required. Experience working with databases, and mature familiarity with Microsoft Office and Adobe applications is desirable. All CIC staff members are expected to excel at expository writing and oral communication; demonstrate a proactive, positive, and member-focused disposition; be able to prioritize independently among competing priorities; organize and manage a wide range of activities with excellent control of detail; exercise creativity and initiative in developing ideas and solving problems; and the inclination to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented work environment.

Occasional overnight and out-of-state (not international) travel is expected. Performing the duties of this position regularly requires the employee to talk and hear, sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time and be able to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
