Responsibilities

The incumbent will operate and maintain the NIST research reactor and associated systems in accordance with established procedures and license conditions under the direction of senior licensed personnel. This position requires shift work within a 24/7 schedule since the reactor is managed per the license with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

Qualifications

In order to qualify, applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 (ZT-II at NIST). Specialized experience is defined as experience with nuclear reactor operation.

Two full years of graduate education

A master's degree

Physical requirements of this position may include but are not limited to: moderate lifting (15-44 pounds); moderate carrying (15 to 44 pounds); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; operation of crane, truck, tractor, or motor vehicle; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; specific visual requirement (correctable to 20/40); depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors; and hearing (aid permitted). Environmental factors may include but are not limited to: outside and inside; electrical energy; working around machinery with moving parts; working on ladders or scaffolding; working below ground; working closely with others; working alone; and protracted or irregular hours of work.
