Summary

The Engineering & Technology Directorate, Software Engineering Division, Science Date Processing Branch (Code 587), is seeking an individual who will be responsible for the design, development, implementation and integration of science data processing applications and technology for flight, in-situ and ground based systems, with emphasis on development of scientific modeling, simulation and visualization applications.

Responsibilities

  • The duties described below are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity.
  • As a Computer Engineer, specializing in Data Systems, you will develop information technology (IT) applications involving state-of-the-art development tools and computing systems.
  • You will integrate technical and operational requirements and evaluate design requirements and limitations of an uncertain nature, under which systems and/or equipment must operate.
  • You will perform data acquisition, reduction, and computation to meet end-to-end systems needs.
  • You will participate in hands-on development and implementation activities and analyze requirements and design criteria for feasibility.
  • You will provide technical support in testing and evaluation.
  • You will arbitrate between various users to generate agreement on common requirements for individual software applications.
  • You will identify, initiate, and facilitate the transfer of federally owned or originated technology and work with team members to ensure the development of software and technical documents are on time and within budget.
  • You will design controversial or leading-edge computer science technology, equipment, systems, mathematical algorithms, or computer software to meet specific mission or program requirements.
  • You plan and coordinate assignments with other agencies and contractors to assure full integration of technical and operational requirements
  • You will evaluate requirements and limitations of an uncertain nature, under which systems and/or equipment must operate.
  • You will ensure integration of commercial and in-house software components for data and information systems.

Qualifications

In addition to meeting the Basic Education Requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

FOR THE GS-11 GRADE LEVEL:

Specialized experience at the next lower grade level (GS-9) is defined as 1.) Assisting in the development of modeling, simulation and visualization applications; 2.) Assisting in the design and development of science data processing systems; and/or 3.) Experience with data systems, database and web applications.

OR

To qualify at the GS-11 grade level based on education: Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in an appropriate field; or three full academic years of graduate education in an appropriate field.

FOR THE GS-12 GRADE LEVEL:

Specialized experience at the next lower grade level (GS-11) is defined as 1.) Development of modeling, simulation and visualization applications; 2.) Design and development of science data processing systems; and/or 3.) Design and development of data systems, database and web applications.

FOR THE GS-13 GRADE LEVEL:

Specialized experience at the next lower grade level (GS-12) is defined as 1.) Leading or managing the development of complex modeling, simulation and visualization applications; 2.) Leading or managing the design and development of complex science data processing systems; and/or 3.) Leading or managing the development of complex data systems, database and web applications.

Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position. *Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
