You will serve as a Engineering Technician in the Fluids Functional Lab Group, Technical Support Department, Division of Engineering and Weapons of NAVACADEMY.

Responsibilities

  • You will design devices used to test and measure lab experiments in the field of aerospace fluid mechanics.
  • You will set up electrical and mechanical equipment to support aerospace laboratory simulations and exercises.
  • You will instruct others on the use of fluid mechanics laboratory equipment.
  • You will Lead or guide others to accomplish work.
  • You will use data acquisition systems and laboratory instrumentation (e.g., oscilloscopes, power meters, laboratory test facilities) to complete require tests.
  • You will advise others of the capability and limitations of computer numerical controlled (CNC) tools.

Qualifications

For the GS-10 vacancy: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Designing, instructing and demonstrating in a laboratory setting the devices used in the field of Fluid Mechanics and Aerospace Technologies (to include using wind tunnels and super-sonic wind tunnels in a laboratory setting); 2) Providing consultation and advice on emerging and cutting edge technologies for Fluid Mechanics using research techniques; 3) Using a variety of manual and CNC controlled machines along with lathes, drill presses, bending and other fabrication tools; 4) Translating and utilizing Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Manufacturer's Drawings in the design and fabrication of naval engineering projects in a controlled environment; 5) Instructing Midshipmen and other authorized personnel via classroom and/or laboratory in the proper techniques and principles utilized in naval engineering facilities for Fluid Mechanics and Aerospace Technology. Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess
Examples of qualifying specialized experience include technical work in: drafting, surveying construction estimating, physical science, mathematics, aerospace, architecture, chemicals, electrical or mechanical systems, mining, petroleum, or nuclear systems.

Experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work provided intensive knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, methods, and precedents. Examples are trade positions with substantial developmental, test, or design responsibilities such as:
  • Planner and estimator who analyzed designs for production purposes.
  • Instrument maker or model maker who performed design or development work on devices fabricated.
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology; or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above for GS-3 (or equivalent). At least 6 of the 24 semester hours must have been in drafting if the position has been designated by a drafting area of specialization.

Certification:

Engineering technicians may be certified by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies, an organization sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers. Certification by the Institute will be helpful as a measure of the technician's quality of experience.
